My gran Ethel Francis Thomas born in Grove Pembroke in 1887, married a Met policeman working at Pembroke Docks and moved to London. I'm trying to track her 4 brothers. The 1901 census gives them as John born 1881 a soldier in the Welsh Regt, Sidney born 1884 a joiner carpenter, Frederick born 1891 and William born 1894. Their parents were William Thomas (b 1861) a lime burner and Martha Lewis (B 1860).
Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Hi
John was born at St Mary's and everyone else at St Michaels, Pembroke.
Any help you can give to solve this mystery would be much appreciated.

The 1901 census gives them as John born 1881 a soldier in the Welsh Regt, Sidney born 1884 a joiner carpenter, Frederick born 1891 and William born 1894. Their parents were William Thomas (b 1861) a lime burner and Martha Lewis (B 1860).
Looking at my index’s/trascriptions of the P.R.’s of Pembs St Mary and Pembs St Michael and other index’s in relation to your research. From My transcription of the parish register of Baptism of Pembs St Mary for the period 1847 to 1895 I note 20 Oct 1880 John Henry to William & Martha Thomas of Golden Hill a labr baptized by C.W. Coddington 18 Jan 1883 Anna Maria to William & Martha Ann Thomas of Golden Hill a labr baptized by W. Jones. Whilst I should not speculate could the following from the same parish register be of interest in the future; 16 Dec 1863 William to William & Tabitha Thomas of the Grove a labr by D.W. Morris 22 Nov 1865 James to William & Tabitha Thomas of the Grove a labr by D.W. Morris
From my transcription of the parish register of baptism at Pembroke St Michael for the period 1839 to 1901 I note; 27 Nov 1878 Arthur William Reynish to William & Martha Thomas of New Way Pembroke St Mary a Blacksmith by C.W. Coddington 29 Sept 1889 Sarah Jane Anne to William & Martha Thomas of Lower Lane a labr baptized by D.R. Parry Davies.
You will note that others of your interest are not listed, so I note the following baptisms Sidney Thomas at Castlemartin in 1887 Frederick Thomas at Nash with Upton in 1890 John Thomas at Warren in 1880 Ethel Thomas at St Twynells in 1898 There is no reference that I can find in Sth Pembs that equates to your William Thomas of 1894.
All the above is assumed that the family has no connection with non conformity, if they have then research becomes far more difficult.
From my transcription of parish registers of baptism for Pembs St Mary 1847 to 1895 I note 07 Aug 1859 Martha to William & Sarah Lewis of the Eastend a labr by E. Edwards 14 Aug 1861 Elizabeth to William & Sarah Lewis of the Eastend a labr by T.E. Gardner 17 Feb 1867 Jane to William & Sarah Lewis of the East End a labr by D. W Morris
Somehow I do not think this is yours but your research may prove otherwise; From my transcription of the mrge register of Pembroke St Michael 1837 to 1908 I note 07 Sept 1878 William Thomas of full age a bach and blacksmith of the Green Pembroke St Mary son of John Thomas a Blacksmith married Martha Reynish of full age a spinster with no shown occupation of Holyland the daughter of William Reynish a Farmer by banns in front of D.E. Williams., Both signed their names in the presence of William Lee and George Froyne.
Given that you possibly agree to the baptism of Martha Lewis, from my transcription of the mrge register of Pembs St Michael 1837 to 1908 I note; 18 Mar 1854 William Lewis of full age a bach and labourer of the Eastend son of John Lewis a labr mrd Sarah John of full age a spinster and Servant of the Eastend the dau of William John a labr by banns in front of W.M.D. Berrington. Both made their marks in the presence of John Brickle and George Froyne. (Note George Froyne was Parish Clerk at this time a position the Froyne family held for generations both at St Mary and St Michael) (The John’s may prove a tentative distant relationship between my wife and yourself)
Further research I believe shows William Lewis was baptized at Pembroke St Mary in 1821 and Sarah John at Lamphey in 1823, however there are alternatives for William Lewis at Cosheston in 1822 and Angle 1823. Once you have studied the above and perhaps x/ref’d to Census, it may be possible that I can assist further, if so just let me know. Rgds Orielbenfro ORIEL a welsh window on a surname
