Glen family
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 07:55 UTC (UK) »

Cannot find birth records for John Glen born 1858 Kinghorne Fife.
Married 1882 Kilmadock to Ann Stewart, parent on cert David Glen and Betsy Dewar.
1881 census at Kilmadock with grandmother Euphemia born 1803 Kinghorne Fife. John is listed as a tailor.

Found a John Glen snr on the 1861 census occupation tailor born 1804 Abbotshall Fife, his wife is Euphemia born 1803, so am on the right track there. Also listed James Glen son 1831 Abbotshall who is also a tailor, and William 1848 Abbotshall.

Problem is I can find no David Glen or Betsey Dewar parents of John, in fact on the IGI can find no Glen family at either Kinghorne or Abbotshall.

Am trying the back door with this one as John Glen and Ann Stewart and their family disappeared after the 1891 census so may be looking at emigration  Roll Eyes
Any help appreciated.

According to the IGI David Glen and Elizabeth Dewar were married at Kirkcaldy on 23 jun 1856 and had the following family all born at Kirkcaldy:

Ratchel 25 Jun 1857
John 1 Oct 1858
Euphemia 28 Feb 1860
Henry 4 Apr 1861
Betsey 15 Feb 1863

A search of the ScotlandsPeople index of births confirms that John was born at Kirkcaldy in 1858.
Hope this helps.

There are 2 John Glen births in Fife in 1858, one registered Kirkcaldy, the other at Monimail. Kirkcaldy probably best bet.

Then again ..maybe not..the thing that is throwing me is that on his marriage cert his father David is listed occupation carter, the only ones I can find are handloom weavers.
Oh well back to the drawing board..
Once again thanks..patvp

Not unknown that occupations changed.
There is a death for Elizabeth Dewar, other surname Glen, in Kirkcaldy in 1864. Might be worth checking to see if it gives husband's occupation.
