LEE Family of Watford
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 10:39 UTC (UK) »

What a open ended topic? I am sorry, but I am at a standstill ..... and I am not 100% the Lee family were from Watford!

Fact: David Rees of Haverfordwest, Wales married Mary Lee 5 May 1791 St. Paul Covent Gardens, Westminister.
This Mary Lee had sisters Elizabeth and Ann; and a mother Mary Lee, as per Wills and witness to certificates.

Now about this time a John Man(n)ing Lee married Mary Lea (e) 21 Jul 1763 Watford and had at least 3 chn: Elizabeth (bap 15/7/1764 Watford); Mary (bap 15/9/1766 Watford); and Ann (bap 15/10/1769 Watford); however, a James Lee and Mary .... also had 3 daughters: Elizabeth (bap 25/7/1765 St. John Hackney); Ann (Bap 3/3/1768 St. John Hackney); and Mary (bap 18/10/1770).

The above David Rees, innkeeper of the large Castle Inn, Haverfordwest and a number of farms in Pembroke lost his wife Mary Lee in 1793, after the births of John 1791 and William 1793. Although frowned upon, it is possible that the sister of his wife, namely Ann Lee, become his partner and mother of more siblings. As the descendants of these siblings also have Lee as a middle name for many years following.

Why Watford? One of these siblings, namely Dr. James Lee Rees of Bristol was left the Coles (Coals) Estate, Watford, when his father David Rees died in 1837. Was this then one of David Rees' farms or was it a farm inherited from the death of his wife's LEE family concerns.

Although, I realise Manning is a common English name. the sixth sibling was called George Manning Rees and he named his first child James Lee Rees, as well.

Finally, my request for help!!!!!!!

Does anyone know of the John Manning Lee born c. 5/7/1713 Watford and his wife Mary and their descendants?
Does anyone have any background knowledge on what could be the Coles (Coals ) farm estate in Watford, during the 1830's?

Keith (Australia)

Hi Jacqui,

By responding to his request on the Lee family of Watford, did you have some inclination that you Harold Martin Rees had some connection?

The Rees family of Haverfordwest did have some Grace doctors and Clark athlete relations who went to South Africa, but I don't know of actual Rees named children doing the same. But I stand to be corrected.

Hi Jacqui

I did a little search on ancestry.com.au and found that Harold Martin Rees may have lived 1936 East Perth; 1937 Perth; 1943 Victoria Park, Fremantle; and 1949 Victoria Park, Swan, Western Australia.

I tried to google but without success.

Interesting to note that on the other side of the country was Ann Martin Rees living 1930 to 1954 in Wollongong.

I also googled Gramstown or Grahamstown South Africa. There were some Rees family members living there.

Jacquie

Have you purchased the marriage registration 1930 (W.A.) for Harold Martin Rees?

It may give you some clues of the name of his father.

Then, if his father was born in the UK, you would then look up FreeBMD site to find more clues.

I have never purchased certificates from Perth, so I do not have an address or cost, but it certainly would be worth it!

Someone reading this dialogue, may know something of South African records and help you.

Regards,

Keith
