Leicester Asylum
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 11:23 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know if records still exist of inmates held in the Leicester District Asylum for around the late 1840's early 1850's and if so where they may have been deposited?

Many thanks

Hi

I'm pretty sure that they are held at the Leicestershire records office in Wigston Magna. The Asylum was built in 1837.

Are you talking about the Asylum at what was Carlton Hayes Hospital? (It originally opened in 1837 - but has since closed down. I think it is now an Alliance and Leicester building?!)

These records are definitely stored at the Leicestershire Records office, where I think you can access patients records, as long as it has been 100 yrs. Be aware that the records from the 1840's will probably be sketchy at best the the Asylum Act did not come into force until 1845.

I've been trying to see if I can find my Great grandmothers records at the Leicester Borough Asylum at the Towers Hospital, so have researched it a little!

Good Luck, Laura

Hello Laura

Many thanks for your reply.

All the information that I have is that in the Enumerators book for the 1851 census it has the Institution listed as 'District Lunatic Asylum for the Counties of Leicester, Rutland, and the Borough of Leicester' and that is was situated in the Parish of St Mary.

It is impossible to derive any information from the census as all the inmates are listed purely by initials so this is  a very long shot at trying to find an ancestor who may be listed in the census as P.B.

I'll take your advice and try the Leicester Records Office.

Once again many thanks for replying

This link will give you an idea of the dates when various asylums were opened:

Leicester Borough Lunatic Asylum didn't open until 1867 so Carlton Hayes is probably your best bet.

ps. I eventually traced my ancestor to the Leicester Borough asylum though she, too, had only been identifed by her initials in the census. I confirmed it was her by getting her death certificate.

It's awful to think of these poor people reduced to nothing more than initials, not even given the dignity of their own name  Cry

Many thanks for the link Annie

It looks as if it is the Institution in Victoria Road that I need to check on. The 1881 census shows it as being in St Marys district.

I sent off this evening for a death certificate that may or may not be the relative I'm seeking, that may give me more information especially if he did die in the asylum.

Not only was the name shown as initials but the place of birth was 'Unknown' Talk about clutching at straws.

Good news!

At the Leicester record office, they have details of the asylum inpatients, which are open for all to read (at least up to 1909 thanks to the "100 year rule"). So it might be worth your while, if you can get there, to pore over the records for more details.

Hello Annie

Many thanks for taking the time to look at the Leicester Records Office. I too found the details on their web site as was impressed with the amount of information they hold.

I'm awaiting the arrival of the death certificate of my ancestor and if it shows he did die in the asylum I shall hot foot it up to Leicester.

Once again thanks for the info.

Hi -

Had a relative who was an inmate at the Glenfrith Hospital and is recorded as being there in the 1911 census. Does anyone know if the records for this hospital are held at the Records office too? Know that she was there a bit before 1911 so might be able to just sneak in under the 100 years act!

Thank you!
