Ringwood Churches and Parish Records
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 23:01 UTC (UK) »

I will be visiting England in just over a week on a genealogical treasure hunt, and would like to track down my Kendall ancestors from Ringwood.

Ideally, I’d like to locate both pre- and post-1837 parish records, and if possible obtain copies of originals which, if I understand correctly, can be obtained from the Records Office in Winchester. Unfortunately, I only have a couple of days in Hampshire, so I want to be well prepared.

My difficulty is that I'm unfamiliar with Ringwood. I'm trying to understand which churches my ancestors might have attended in case it helps with finding their records.

My great-grandfather and his family lived at "Riverside, Bickerly" (1894-1907). This looks like the modern Bickerly Road.

His father lived at "Crow Cottages or The Barracks", "Crowe Road", or simply "Crowe" (1867-1911). Someone kindly provided me with information from the Bisterne Chapel records from this timeframe; Bisterne looks like a long hike from Crow.

Prior to 1867, the family lived at Sandford.

The family of my great-grandfather's mother lived at Poulner (1795-1871).

The Hampshire Records Office web site indicates that they have parish records for Ringwood St. Peter & St. Paul, but the Ringwood Parish web site mentions three churches: The Parish Church at Market Place, St. Paul's Church at at Bisterne (is this the "Bisterne Chapel"?), and St. John's church on Linford Road, Poulner. There's no mention of St. Peter's Church.

I suspect I would be better off just going to Winchester and doing all my record hunting there, but the "Ringwood Online" web site lists numerous other churches in Ringwood, and I've seen no indication that their records would be at Winchester.

I'd be very grateful if anyone who knows Ringwood and/or parish record hunting could advise.

Thanks!

The original church for the ancient parish of Ringwood is dedicated to St Peter & St Paul.  This is the parish church on Market Place.  Original records are at Winchester (C 1561-1887, M 1561-1897, B 1561-1894, Banns 1754-1824) but you will only be allowed to see the microfiche version.  Original registers are very rarely produced.

Bisterne - is a chapelry of St Peter and St Paul - and dedicated to St Paul.  The records are apparently held at the parish and date from 1864 for C & B, 1874 for M.

Poulner is also a chapelry of Ringwood, dedicated to St John the Baptist.  This church also holds the original records.  C date from 1917, M 1973 and banns 1975.  No burials.

Burley parish was formed from Ringwood parish in 1840 and is dedicated to St John the Baptist. Original records are at Winchester (C 1839-1992, M 1840-1989, B 1843-1992, Banns 1886-1987 gap 1928-34).

If you suspect that your relatives may have attended either Poulner or Bisterne, you will need to contact the priest in charge to determine if the records are still with the parish and if you can view them.

If you are visiting Ringwood anyway, it might be worth having a look in the public library. It's within easy walking distance of the Bickerley and I think they had copies of several surrounding parish registers on microfiche in the local history section. If I get to town, I'll have a look to make sure, as my memory might be playing tricks!
Crowe Cottages are shown on the 6" Ordnance Survey Map of 1872 about 1/4 mile South of the hamlet of Crowe next to the railway crossing. Back in 1980, I worked at Bisterne Farm and there were several local places with "Barracks" in the title including a Barrack Lane. It was said that in 1830,Mr Mills the local landowner, formed a volunteer defence unit and saved Ringwood from the agricultural rioters who were causing trouble in the area.

Further to the previous post, I had a look in Ringwood Library today and noted their family history collection. It is contained in blue ring folders in the local history section and I'll list what I noted down in case it is of interest to other researchers.
Parish registers mostly on fiche: Ringwood BMD from 1561 (as per Nell's post)
R'wood Banns 1764-1824
Ringwood Burials transcriptions 1841-1949
Mem. Inscrips. from Hightown Cem.
Poor Accounts 1815
Trinity Indep Church records 1790-1837
Pres. Chapel of St Thomas BMD from 1748
R'wood Baptisms transc. 1759-1882
R'wood Marriages transcribed and indexed by Bride and Groom, 1759-1883*

For surrounding parishes, the following registers are kept on fiche:
Bransgore 1822, Breamore 1575, Burley1840, Burton 1875,Damerham1678,Ellingham1596,Hyde1856,Fordingbridge1642- 1831,Hale1626,Harbridge1720,Ibsley1783,Martin1754,Rockbourne1561,Sopley1678,Whitsbury1779, all until late 20th cent except Fordingbridge.
There are several census transcripts and fiches for Ringwood and surrounding parishes as well as the HRO wills index.1571-1858.
I hope that helps and might save some petrol! Smiley

*In the Marriages transcripts, I saw two "Kendles", a James m.1824 and a John m.1822, I don't know if they are related?

According to various family trees I've found online (and have yet to verify), James (b.1801) and John (b.1792) were brothers of my ggg-grandfather Stephen. It's unfortunate that the old marriage records didn't include the fathers' names.

Thanks for taking the time to dig up this information. I'm leaning toward visiting Winchester first, spending a day or two searching their records,  then going to Ringwood to get a feel for the place and try to wrap up any loose ends.

The library does seem to have some records that are not listed at Winchester and vice-versa. For example, the Winchester site says that the Ringwood library has Burley marriages only. (I'm still a bit confused about Ringwood Parish vs. Burley Parish.) And I'm assuming that the library doesn't have the means to make copies from fiche.

I've been calling the published telephone number for the Ringwood Parish Office (473219), but haven't been able to get an answer. I don't imagine they'll be keen on calling me back in Canada, so I haven't left a message. Would anyone know if they keep regular office hours when I might try again, or have an e-mail contact?

The library may well have a fiche reader/printer in which case you will be able to make prints from the fiche.  My library charges 50p per print.

There is a contact form link (for e-mail) on this page:

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/library/library-finder/ringwood-library.htm

right-hand side near the bottom.  Ask them if they have facilities to print from fiche.  Can't do any harm  Wink

And I wish you luck Smiley

Just realised that you may not have these details.

Stephen Kindle baptised 11 Mar 1791 Ringwood, parents Thomas & Amy

Is he yours?

James Kindle baptised 11 Jul 1802, Ringwood, father listed as Charles.

Don't see John at the moment  Undecided

Let me know what gaps you have and I'll see if I can find anything just to help guide you and make your time in Winchester or Ringwood more worthwhile.

The full details from the marriage index on the Kendles are as follows:
James Kendle married Martha Cox of Ringwood, 10th Oct 1824
John Kendle married Ann Croucher, 3 Oct 1822
I'll have to recheck the details of Burley records, the Winchester folks could well be right saying that only marriages are on the fiche, although the folder I looked at didn't say so Embarrassed.
It's worth remembering too that the library is closed all day Monday before planning a visit.

Wow, that's great Nell!

That's our Stephen (b.1791).

The link from Stephen to Thomas was one of the things I was hoping to find. Did you find this in the Ringwood Parish Records?

I'm surprised that James wasn't actually his brother! They were neigbours in Sandford in 1841 and 1851. Perhaps Charles was Thomas' brother? Again, several online trees list Thomas and Amy's children as Thomas (1781), Stephen (1791), John (1792), William (1795) and James (1801).

The age gaps seemed a little odd with so few children. The elder brother Thomas lived with James in 1841, so I doubt that he's one of Thomas Sr.'s children either.

I'd like to find the marriage of Thomas and Amy too, and see how far back I can trace the Kendall/Kendell/Kendle/Kindle line.

There are a whole lot of mysteries that I plan to investigate whilst in Hampshire. I would welcome some help with them! In fact, it would be a good idea for me to catalogue what I'm looking for to help keep me on track. I'll do that, then start a new thread.

Thanks again to Nell and Fred for the records you've been able to find!

I started typing up a list of the records I want to dig up, and realized they fall into a couple of categories.

Primarily, I want to obtain copies of BMD records for each direct ancestor. I also want to find the BMD dates for siblings if possible. I've ordered the pre-1837 parish record CDs from the HGS, so the post-1837 records are the ones I really must find whilst in Hampshire.

In addition, there are gaps in what I've been able to find out thus far, and a few questions around missing records and orphaned children.

A major mystery is the first marriage of my great-grandfather Charles William Kendall. The Ringwood PR shows that he married Annie Manston (b.1857) on 25 Sep 1877. But in the 1881 census he was (apparently) again single, lodging at 51 Devois Street 51 Bevois Street in Southampton St. Mary’s. I have been unable to find any online record of the passing of Annie. I've searched every possible permutation!

In the 1891 census, three "Kendell" grandchildren were living with Charles' parents John and Elizabeth. They were Ada May (b.1883 in Ringwood), Charles William (b.1885 in Ringwood) and Bertie Tom (b.1888 in Christchurch Bransgore). I hope to find their parents' names. [UPDATE: parents were Charles William Kendall and Janet Kendall, formerly Kendall. There's no record of their marriage or of Janet's death or re-marriage.]

Charles himself vanished from the records until 1901 when he reappears as "William" in the Ringwood census at Bickerly, with a family of four and a new wife (Mary Ann Walker). I can find no record of their marriage (which was possibly in Southampton, where their first child was born, or wherever she came from).

The children were Arthur Adrian (b.1894), Albert Edward (b.1896), Annie Julia (b.1898) and Frederick Lewis (b.1900). The FreeBMD index says Annie's birth was registered in Ringwood and the others in Southampton. I purchased a GRO extract for Arthur. He was born at 48 Coleman St. Southampton, and his father was indeed Charles William (not just William).

[UPDATE: In fact, Mary Ann was born to James and Julia Brookes; Julia was widowed and re-married Harry George Walker, who adopted her two children, Mary Ann and Roseanna. Julia and Harry had a daughter, Lily. After Walker's death in 1901, Mary Ann and Charles married. She used the name Mary Ann Brookes and said her father was Harry George Brookes (not Walker). Interestingly, Charles's cousin Thomas had married a Julia Brookes in 1897 and they appeared together in the 1901 census, along with daughter Lily Kendall. Charles and Mary Ann listed the Ash Tree Road, Portswood home of Thomas and Julia as their residence on their 1901 marriage record. In 1902, Thomas married again - this time to Julia Walker. And in 1905, Mary Ann's sister Roseanna married Henry Kendall (the son of another of Charles's cousins) with whom she was recorded living under her own name in the 1901 census.]

[UPDATE: Charles and Mary Ann had a fifth child, Walter Charles, born 15 Nov 1907 at 9 Riverside, Bickerly, Ringwood.]

Mary Ann died in Ringwood on 11 Dec 1907, after which Charles married my great-grandmother Rose. Charles himself died on 23 Oct 1910, shortly after my grandfather was born. (I have GRO extracts of these records.) Rose took my grandfather and left Ringwood.

I found Albert and Annie in the 1911 census with relatives, but no sign of the other two three thus far, nor any record of their passing. [UPDATE: eventually found all but Artur Adrian with relatives.]

Also with with Charles' mother in the 1911 census was a "Charles Walter Kendall" (b.1907 at Bickerly). I'd like to find out if his parents were Charles and Mary Ann. (In the GRO birth index for 1907, I've found only "Walter Charles Kendall" and "Charles William S Kendall".)

The Southampton connection is problematic, as the parish records don't appear to be available at Winchester and I probably won't have time to visit Southampton.

Thanks!
David

P.S. If you find anything in the Ringwood PR, could you let me know the reference numbers so I can get copies?

Some Ringwood marriages for you:

Thomas Kindle married Amy Hatcher 20 May 1785
George Kindle married Jane Ruffel 24 Jul 1783
John Kindle married Sarah Newman 1 Aug 1786
Charles Kindle (widower) married Lucy Wiseman 16 Aug 1801
James Kindall married Elizabeth Jennings 27 Jun 1803

Family groups - children baptised in Ringwood:

Parents: George & Mary

Mary  22 Feb 1764
James 17 Mar 1771
Stephen 18 Aug 1776

Father George (no wife's name given) (possibly the same George as above):
George 30 Nov 1756
John 9 Mar 1758
Charles 30 Jan 1760

Father Thomas:

Stephen 11 Mar 1791 (mother named as Amy)
Thomas 13 Oct 1793 (no mother's name mentioned)

Father Charles (no name for mother recorded)

Charles 27 Apr 1794
George 19 Nov  1790
George 6 Jan 1795
James 11 Jul 1802
Charity 4 Jan 1807

Other possibly relevant marriages:
George Kendel married Mary Peckham in Sopley 2 Feb 1756
Charles Kentle married Elizabeth Croucher in Sopley 23 Dec 1786

Ringwood is so close to Dorset that you may have to consider that the families moved across the county border and other information may be found there.

Hope this is of some use.

Hi David
I have used the Ringwood Library many times looking for my Hutchings ancestors and have found some little gems on the micro fishe there. The only problem is that there is only one machine and its quite old and you can't produce any prints at all. What I do is take my little digital camera and photograph the screen and then print them at home which are turning out OK. What is quite interesting is that if you can't find a marriage certificate then you can usually find the Marriage Banns record. I have also found many Parish birth records.
The Ringwood Meeting House is also a good place to go as there was a photographic exhibition, 'Ringwood Then & Now' and it also has various census copies and a lot of resident directories and its very interesting, this from memory closes at 12 o'clock.
If you are interested in burials then the Parish council offices (not the Town Council) is also very good, I gave them some surnames which they then found the list of all burials for that name which led me view the original Grave Register books. From that I got the grave plots and then visited the cemetery and then with some help from the groundsmen found my GG Grandfather/mother and my GGGG Grandfather/mother all buried in separate graves but all together which was nice. None of them had any memorial stones.
I hope this was of some help, you will love Ringwood its a lovely little town
Cheers

Hi David

Just picked up your and other users' messages.  I have just started to investigate my grandmother, Florence Kendall, (b 1902) and kn0w her family come from Sandford and Ringwood (I actually live in Ringwood too).

The Kendalls from Sandford worked in the Ringwood collar and cuff factory which is now used as a house in The Quomp just a few mins walk away from Ringwood Town Centre.

I guess I just missed your visit to Ringwood but if I can be of any help let me know.

Regards
