My gtgtgrandmother Sarah Stone (nee Yeats) died in Britford Workhouse, Salisbury, in 1891 after being accidentally burned. Could anyone advise me whether I have any chance of getting hold of a coroner's report, or other report from the Workhouse itself, and how to go about this? Many thanks, Jenny

Hi,
If the Inquest report has survived the best place to try is the local Record Office; they could also advise on the local newspapers that might have carried a news item. Give them as much detail as you have on the death certificate.
I've managed to find one surviving report (1902) and a news item regarding another (1914); both in the London area.
Good luck!

That's very kind of you, Nicky, thanks very much. I can wait! The death date was 6 February 1891, the inquest took place on 9 February and the coroner was R A Wilson. Cause of death at Britford Union Workhouse was 'shock to the system from being accidentally burnt'. Best wishes, Jenny

Hi Nicky, I had a reply from the Wiltshire Records Office and they have checked Salisbury Journal without success. However, they found a brief report from the Master of the Union Workhouse about the death of Sarah Stone and are sending me a copy. So you need not check the Salisbury Journal after all. Many thanks again for offering. Jenny
