Well did a search on John Maxwell Richardson, downloaded his death from S/P, but no relation to mine, if I had read the thread on John Richardson from DDJ Jakes first, I would have seen that, as he has all the birth & death info there.... Roll Eyes.

Also tried the Stewart connection that Audrey suggested, but the children's births, and spouses do not fit in either.

Checked out John from Perth again, but his wife died after my John's children were born, so another dead end.

I got desperate and searched the English records, but no luck.

Well folks, do you have any other idea's? Or I will just have to put John to bed for another couple of years.

It might be a Kirk Sessions Minutes searchbut which parish  Undecided

These are all in Edinburgh and, I think, at the Mitchell in Glasgow and probably the Ewart in Dumfries.

SP do have plans to put them on line but not clear about the time scale.

Another thought is to try to find out about his employers and their properties.

JaneyJ .... thanks for your PM ... but I see no link to my multitude of Richardsons.
However, I have found your MAXWELL origin .. from an authentic OPR.
NICOLAS MUIR was christened on 14 FEB 1792 in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright.
Her parents were MAXWELL MUIR  and  AGNES MCCLURG
It appears as if she may have been an only child. I have not found a marriage OPR for Maxwell and Agnes.

Hi DDJ

Interesting because Nicholas's death cert of 4th August 1875 has her aged 83 and parents as Robert Muir and Margaret Hope. It is the correct cert as she is down as the widow of John Richardson, Butler.

Her second daughter's middle name was Hope.

Hi Gadget,

Who was the informant to the registrar in 1875?
As I have found on a number of occasions, and probably you too have found ... with elderly folk like Nicolas, the informant may have scant knowledge of the deceased actual parentage.

Aye,

I've been looking at that. It was a nephew. However, given that the name Hope crops up in her daughter's middle name, I think that the mother's surname is likely to be correct.

I've got the MIs for Kirkpatrick Durham (and all the other KKD parishes) so will check up to see if there is anything there but, as she seems to have moved around, there might not be anything.

I wonder if Jane has checked for wills of any of them.

Goodmorning All,

Firstly thankyou DDJJake for your info.  Smiley

Like you I have found informants a bit unreliable.  But I think the informant, Robert Knox, on Nicholas's death cert' would be fairly sure of his facts.... he is the son of Nicholas's sister Elizabeth....and...the husband of her daughter Jane,  Shocked.

I also found the OPR you mentioned, but have been unable to find any more info on that Nicholas, Oh No I've had another thought...what if my Nicholas was adopted by Robert Muir and Janet Hope. I have been unable to find her birth records!

Jane died in Burnside of Cul*****,  Kirkpatrick Durham in 1903, no burial info.

Hi Gadget,

I have tried to find wills for the Richardson's but nothing so far, only wills for the Knox side, and no mention of the Richardson's on them. Sad

Jane.

Hi Jane

I wonder if it's worth you finding out if there is a relationship between Robert and Maxwell Muir.

There is a bpt. of Maxwell Muir as a patron submission  on the IGI 17 Sept 1760 in Minnigaff. parents - Robert Muir and Elizabeth Martin

and another submitted one for a Robert Mure 9 Nov 1787, Minnigaff. Parents - Robert Mure and Jannet Hope.

In fact there seem to be a whole raft of patron submissions for the Muir/Mure etc. family in Minnigaff.

Have you checked Penninghame, Kirkmabreck and Kells?

Hi Jane

Maybe Robert Knox had a slight memory lapse concerning his Grandmother Hope/Muir's first name. This is what I've found on SP for baptisms in Minnigaff:

9th Nov 1787 - Robert    Parents - Robert Mure and Jannet Hope (as found by me on the IGI and Audrey on the BVRI)

9th Jan 1790 - Elizabeth Parents - Robert Muir and Jannet Elizabeth  Hope

20 June 1791 - Mary Parents - Robert Muir

22 Jan 1794 - Sarah Parents - Robert Mure

I'm still thinking that it's a strong possibility that as Robert was a Butler/coachman he might have met Nicholas in Kirkcudbrightshire/Dumfriesshire but that he was not necessarily born in the counties.

Hi Folks,
Here's another interesting christening .... away back ...

NICOLAS MUIR a female was christened on 09 APR 1741  in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright.
Parents were ... quote "WILEAM MUIR  and MARGRATT MAXWEL"
OPR authentic christening.

Hi Everyone,

You all have been really great and I really appriciate all your hard work,  Smiley.

I've followed your leads, and had some fun along the way.

I have most of the info on Nicholas's family, but Sarah is a new one Gadget so she will be added to the family.

I followed the lead on Maxwell Muir, I found 2 siblings JEAN MUIR 1763 and MARGARET MUIR

Jane

Just wondering about the Mary b. 1791.

Have to followed her up at all?  It might (outside possibility) be that either she or the Sarah could be Nicholas  - I have examples in my family where the baptismal name subsequently gets a middle name tagged on and the person is known by this middle name.
