hi you two,

debs, In answer to your question, I don't know who she married, there was no indication on the admission form.

Just been going through the tree, my grandfather was 20 years younger than his older sister, in fact born 1 year after she married, so I more or less knew about his mothers side of the family.

Got this passenger list:
1 st May 1860 Ship name Underwriter
Liverpool to New York
Alexander McNeil aged 28 b 1832 Collier going to Utah
Archibald McNeil  aged 15 b 1845  Collier going to Utah
both born in Scotland

I noticed too lots of Archibald & Janet McNeil come up for Canada ? Have you thought of looking there it was only a trip over the boarder from USA maybe that is where they ended up ? just a thought
Also seen surname wrote as McNiel & McNeel maybe worth trying

Think they are the wrong people.     Archibald born in the year 1836 and the right year for Janet but wrong person, none of them had 2nd initials.

Its now 7.30 am, I have to leave for an appointment at 8 am, will be back on in an hour or so.

Have fun ..... told you it would be a hard one to hunt Grin

Any suggestions are welcome ......will try Canada ..... certainly the spelling of names is always different, the clerks wrote it down the way it sounded .... I've noticed that a lot in transcribing .....

Why oh Why didn't they have second names Roll Eyes

Cheers

Hi Debs  hope this helps from 1st post regarding parents;

My gggrandfather was born 9 June 1799, Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland to James McNeil (his name was taken from the death registration of Alexander) and Margaret McBride.    Died 12 January 1867, in Abbey Poorhouse.  Baptised 16 June 1799 Abbey, Paisley.   He appears in the 1851 census as living at 17 Green Street, Barony, Glasgow, and was a cotton spinner.   I guess he was Partially disabled due to this.

I think that is father Alexander of 2 children Janet & Archibald that's how I would read it

so see if we can find him in either 1851 or 1861 Census in Scotland might tell us mother's name...... unless  KHP already knows ?

Aah just seen your post for 1851 Census so where is Janet b 1822 ?
wonder that is her you found in 1851 maybe loding with the family ?

Hi Tiggi

yes , that's why I asked about the kid's mother's name .... Alexander was s/o James McNeil and Margaret McBride.

Found the mother's name in 1851 ..Janet!

I can see them in 1841 but Janet bc 1822 isn't with them. Out working somewhere?

wish we knew who she married and where

There is a Janet Mcneil in 1861
born 1827 Paisley, Renfrewshire  aged 34
City Parish Poorhouse Glasgow Barony Lanarkshire

Could this be daughter working there? is it same place Alexander was living in Barony Glasgow in 1851?

Also a Barbara McNeil listed b 1826  aged 35 Campbelton, Argyleshire same place

Hi jc  that could well be their marriage good find
lets recap :

IGIs have

ALEXANDER MCNEIL
JANET MCDOW

20 JUL 1822   Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland

I think we can agree this is same family in 1841 & 1851
Although Daniel is aged wrong in 1841 Census

1841  Montgy St Eaglesham Renfrewshire
Alexander McNeil b 1801  40 cotton spinner
Janet McNeil        b 1801  40
Daniel McNeil                    40
Margarete McNeil b 1833   8
Archibald McNeil   b 1837   4

1851        17 Green Street, Barony, Glasgow
Alexr McNeil 51                     b 1800
Janet  50                              b 1800
Margt  17                              b 1824
Daniel  21                             b 1830
Archibald 14 ...errand boy    b 1837

So If the married in 1822
Margaret                                      born 1824
Daniel                                           born 1830
Archibald                                       born 1837

Could there be more children?
KHP mentions a  Janet born 1822

Has Debs found her maybe living with her Grandmother?
Alexander mother was called Margaret Mcbride

1841 Matshew St Greenock West Renfrewshire
Margaret McNeil 60
Catherin McNece 30
Janet McNeil 18
Margaret Campbell 10

I wonder if there is an Alexander  quite a few on census ? If they called a child after mother makes sense a son after father don't you think?
