Possible .... but then the son could be named after the fathers father  ; Hard to say if Janet and Archie continued the naming pattern, but it certainly continued on the NZ line, then gradually petered out along the generations.

I did have a naming pattern link that explained the patterns .... can't lay my hands on it at the moment.

Ok tell a lie, this is one but not the one I have:

Thanks for that  Cool

I am thinking that Tiggi found a Janet McNeil in 1861 in the same place as Alexander the dad was in 1861.

So we have Archie with parents in 1851...then what? Do we have him in Scotland in 1861 yet?
We also have a Janet Mcneil working at the same place her dad, Alex, died in 1861.

Janet born 1822, Archie b 1836 ....14 years difference ..

If Janet was still in Scotland in 1861 she would have been 39 and Archie 26.

I Have found Janet (well, I think it's her  Lips Sealed Undecided ) in 1860 in NY

so is the 1860 New York girl yours or is the 1861 girl born 1827 Paisley, Renfrewshire  aged 34
City Parish Poorhouse Glasgow Barony Lanarkshire , that Tiggi found yours?

ooooo my .... trying to cook dcinner and do this  Roll Eyes Tongue

added ... sorry this does not amke sense , Alex, the dad, stated that Janet was overseas in 1864 ..so she could still be in Scotland or USA in 1861.

Good question, if she was working in the same place as Alex, why was she put down as being overseas?

I would say the 1860 could be mine .... but would need concrete proof.

looks like the mother was pregnant every 1 1/2 years .... 9 kids all up, so by the time she had her last pregnancy she was 36 years old.

Alexander stated that janet was overseas on his 1864 admission ...... so she could be either of them in 1861 ...Scotland or Canada as this is 3 years before the admission.

I haven't been able to find Archibald after 1851 .... and I am not sure if he left Scotland earlier than his brothers or about the same time.

Alexander (lets call him jnr) left in 1865 and Daniel in 1866.

Still can't comprehend why Alexander was not mentioned for being overseas.

From what I can make out of the remarks on the form, since Janet McDougall died, Alexander had for weeks and often months lived through Glasgow in fact wherever he could get a nights lodging.

So I would say he couldn't keep up with the rent, so he was living from hand to mouth.   Alexander and Daniel were married with family, so they couldn't take dad in, so where were the others.

Added:  Ok Janet and Archie overseas and the rest of the children probably deceased

Ok, I realise this is a toughy, and I appreciate the help/suggestions so far .... but don't worry if you can't progress ...... it was just a long shot that I thought I might get somewhere

Sub-district Darlington (A)

Catherine 2 all children b. Ontario

Living next door....

Marion 64 b. Scotland
James 25 b. Ontario Farmer
Duncan 21 b. Ontario
James Mann 11 no relationship given.

Hope this info helps.

Not quite sure if it is the same Archibald .... age fits .... but the one for James doesn't fit the birth year...  could be a different McNeil family altogether.

Farmer caught my attention ..... as that is what Daniel and Alexander ended up doing and is in my blood.

Well, I guess these two are going to keep my brick wall standing.  I have exhausted my search on the net.   My cousin travels a lot, so if they ever get to America/Canada will get them to have a nose around.  Hopefully, some day someone will google and say "Hey I am a descendant", that happened when I posted on the Irish Board Grin

In the meantime, I have found more family we have been searching for Cheesy waiting for the certs to arrive, so I can once more starting digging.

Thank you once again for your time and patience, especially when I couldn't be much help with suggestions.

Barbara congratulations on starting a fantastic thread, there are a lot of wonderful detectives out there, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to try my luck Kiss

Cheers
