Eliza HICKMAN and Henry CARTER Somerset
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 11:19 BST (UK) »

Hello

I am looking for information on Eliza HICKMAN and Henry CARTER m. 1842 approx Somerset.  Eliza b. 1824 approx Somerset, Henry b. 1816 approx possibly Somerset as well.

Both emigrated to Auckland NZ in 1849, potentially via Sydney, Australia.  Henry d. 1862 Auckland.  Eliza d. 1894 Auckland.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Dear Keston
Do you have any idea of where in Somerset Eliza may have come from. I cannot find an Eliza Hickman in Somerset on the 1841 census although there are a number of Elizabeth Hickman's.

I also cannot find a marriage. The surname Hickman is not common in Somerset - there are a few listed on 1841 census including an Elizabeth - could her name have been Elizabeth'?

There are a couple of possible Henry Carter's on 1841 census.

The marriage may not have got into the indexes as it was early days for Civil Registration. If you can narrow down any potential places in Somerset then there is more chance of finding something through the parish records.

Hi

Thanks for your efforts on this.

Information I have is coming from her NZ Death Certificate and marriage certs there of her children.

These specify only Somersetshire as birthplace and as place of marriage.  She is given as 70 years old at death in 1894, and 18 years at the time of her marriage to Henry Carter (approx 1842).  These details are on her death certificate and I have no other corroboration of her age apart from a transcription of her monumental inscription from a graveyard in Auckland which also give sher age as 70 years at death.  As to wedding details the only info I've been able to find is that given on the death certificate.

Approx date of arrival in NZ is given as 1849 (45 years prior to 1894).  I have some indication that they came from Sydney as have found a listing for this in localpapers of the time.  They may therefore have left the UJK prior to 1849.

However, children I have identified for her to date indicate that earliest is born 1852 in Auckland and this is corroborated by the number listed as living on death certificate.  This could indicate that the 1842 date is a bit early as I would have expected children to appear later in NZ or at least in reference to passage to New Zealand unless earlier ones all died.  Approx dates of birth of these children seem to be a bit wrong also on the death certificate when compared to dates Ihave from their birth certs in NZ so this could also cast doubt on dates for wedding on that document.

Sorry I'm not able to give any more information than this at this stage.

Looking at the web it seems there are quite a few Hickman's in Birmingham / olves area but as you say not a lot in Somerset.

Hello Keston
I wonder if Eliza married in Australia prior to arrival in NZ. This would account for the first child not appearing until 1852.

Another scenerio - and I hate to offer this one - is that the marriage to Henry Carter was a second one for her- so Hickman is not her birth surname.

Do you know anything about Henry? What info is on his death cert? I understand the problem with death certs is the information is given by the surviving family and not the person themselves so errors can creep in.

It seems the consistant facts are that Eliza used the name Eliza all her life- she was born in c1824 and although there are indeed more Hickmans in the Midlands - there seems no reason to say she came from Somerset if she did not.

I think Henry maybe the best lead or trying passenger lists for UK to Australia.

Let me know what you think please

Hi

Sorry for my delay in replying.  Have been trying to see what else I can dig up.

We have information that she may have married again in NZ to a Shirtcliffe after death of Henry but this is not of mucj help.

Noted in the Anglican Archives next t Henry's burial record there is a note about Clutton 1827.  Clutton is I think a parish south of Bristol.

Looking on Ancestry though there seems to be a listing for a Henry Carter, wife Elizabeth and family living in the arish of Churchill RG11/2424.  Based on this listing that Henry is born in 1830.  This can't be my Henry and Eliza as they were already in NZ, but I'm just not sure if this is the basis of the note in the Anglican Archives or whether there was another Henry Carter from Clutton born three years earlier who also married an Eliza.

Re the Eliza and her birthplace, all records we have which say anything about this say she was from Somerset.  She is always referred to as Eliza but her youngest daughter was Elizabeth not ELiza.

I have found only one ELizabeth Hickman in Somerset with about the same birthdate (1826) at  HO 107/960/7.

Sorry, this is proving a bit difficult.

Hi Keston
Henry and Eliza Carter were my great great grandparents, but like you, I have little information and you obviously have more than me.  I would be interested in finding out what information you have.  My email address is (*)
