Were your forbears Wycombe Circuit Methodists?
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 16:26 BST (UK) »

Hello,

I have about 4 generations of my family who were Wycombe Circuit Methodists and I was wondering if anyone else had Wycombe Circuit Methodists too?

I got the book '250 Years of Chiltern Methodism' by Barry P. Sutcliffe and if anyone wants some information on their ancestors if they're included in the books.

The Eureka Partnership has transcribed and published almost all Buckinghamshire Methodist registers - including both the High Wycombe Wesleyan and Primitive Circuits.  Check out their website at www.eurekapartnership.com

I would be interested to see if there are many entries for the surname Wright.

Alice Wright at Amersham High Street Wesleyan Chapel

Trustees List for 1954 Holmer Green Wesleyan Chapel mentions a Horace William Wright

'Mr Apps once told us children that if we learned the hymn 'Saviour, while thy heart is tender', he would give us sixpence if he recited it the next time he came to preach. I learned the hymn but Mr. Apps forgot to ask us to recite' Horace Wright of Holmer Green.

'William Line used to walk to his services shouting 'Halleujah!' as he went. I always think of him when I sing "Oh Happy Day that sings my choice". His beamed and I think it was the first time it "registered" for me' Horace Wright of Holmer Green

'One local preacher came to Winchmore Hill in a horse and trap. The horse was put in a nearby stable. When the preacher got onto his "one last point" in the sermon, my father went out to harness the horse to the trap and wait outside the chapel. The "one last point" lasted half and hour and it was a cold winter's night - and neither the horse or my dad was very pleased' Horace Wright of Holmer Green

REWORDED: Downley chapel was erected in 1824 when there was only 30 houses in Downley. Mr John Wright, a local preacher, lent the money.

Hope that helps you, if Alice is related to you I will copy out the piece she is mentioned in.

Hello Matt

I note that you are offering a lookup in the High Wycombe Wesleyan Methodist Circuit Baptism Registers and I am aware that this would be from books published by The EurekA Partnership.

I am (politely) asking if you would kindly withdraw this offer for the following reasons:

Firstly, the books are copyright of The EurekA Partnership as stated on the first page of each book.

Secondly, The EurekA Partnership consists of three family historians who have invested a great deal of time and money transcribing, typing, formatting and publishing historical records for the benefit of those who cannot visit the Record Offices or Archives to view them for themselves.  The book prices are deliberately kept as low as possible to make them affordable to all, and any profit from the sale of the books goes towards expenses incurred in creating further titles.  No sale equals no profit - and no profit equals no new books!

So please, rather than offer free look-ups, perhaps you might be kind enough to give out a link to The EurekA Partnership's website at www.eurekapartnership.co.uk

Many thanks ... Orpheus

Incidentally, Volume One of the above books has 10 instances of the name WRIGHT, Volume Two has 7 and Volume 3 has 5.

Thank you Matt - it is much appreciated.  I hope that you receive your books soon.  They were posted over two weeks ago and should have arrived by now.

Yes it is just the sorting office in Reading which has been relocated to Swindon - sending out postmen 20 miles further to get the post and it is now three days later than it should be. I have put it down to that as everyone else who recommended them to me semed to recieve them quick enough.

Smiley I am excited though - can you tell me, are there any CUTLER's in it?

Yes, 8 in Volume One, 18 in Volume Two, and 15 in Volume Three.  There are also some CUTTERs from Lane End who may be connected as this name is often confused with CUTLER.

Hi Orpheus, may I be cheeky please and ask if the name West from Lane End appears at all?

My gt. grandfather Walter West ran some sort of soup kitchen in High Wycombe but I wonder if he came under the Methodist church.

Thanks. R.

Royd,

I have a West marriage here and I know that West is a 'common' name but here is a couple of results from my Cutler search:

24 May 1763 Great Marlow
John X WEST of this parish
Jeminah X CUTTLER of this parish
Witnesses Susannah Arnold Elizabeth Arnold
by Banns

1 May 1873 West Wycombe
William EVANS, aged 28, Bachelor of West Wycombe, Chairmaker son of Charles Evans, Farm Labourer
Jane WEST, aged 29, Spinster of West Wycombe daughter of James West, Roadman
Witnesses Joseph Cutler Anne Cutler
by Licence

I will just nip upstairs and dig out my book again to see and West's in there Cool

Hi Matt thanks for that.  Jane was my gt.gt. aunt so it's good to have that extra info.  We have been in touch before over the Cutlers so it looks as though there was a good friendship between the two families.   Grin

'Mr. A. V. West (Golf links Road, Flackwell Heath, formerley of Westbourne Street) has become circuit steward and accounts are surely well audited by Mr. D. Christian!'.

'the musicians .... Mr. Jack West, the genial conductor' about Sands Chapel

'mention must be also be made of lay stalwarts, like.... Mr W. West, one time church President' about Oxford Road Chapel
