Looking for information on the Belken Family. My gr,gr,gr grandfather (Johannes Belken) came to the USA in June of 1852 with his family. There was another Belken family on the ship (Jasper and his family) which settled in Missouri, and my family settled in Southwest Wisconsin. Don't know if they are related. I would love to find out more on the Belken family and the maiden name of Carolina the wife of Johannes, who died between June 1852 and Oct 1854, as he remarried then. Johannes was born about 1810 and was listed as from Alfen on the ships list. Can you tell me anything about the area? Any help would be appreciateds! thanks!

Hello There is a place called Alfen in Nordrhein West falen near Paderborn.
For this period of time - parish records are the most likely source of information. Each denomination tends to look after their own records- often in central archives. My best guess is Paderborn would be the best place to enquire.
I would suggest you email the stadtarchiv in Paderborn - the Town Archive
stadtarchiv (at) paderborn.de.
Ask for both the location of Catholic and Ev.Lutheran record archives and also if they have anything on file for Johannes Belken. Sometimes things like Marriage contracts are found in the archives in Germany. Give as much background information as feasible.
I would recommend you write in German with an English translation. Most archives are helpful and will point you in the right direction however it is better to write in the native language if possible.
I am sure if you are stuck there are many people on RC who will help with a translation.
Good luck
Sue

Thank you Sue! I have no idea on how to write German! Where can I find that help? They were Catholic. I know his wife was Caroline, but no maiden name. I can't find either her or Joahnnes death records or where they are buried, but do have his probate papers that say where he died. I am thinking they didn't have to keep records then and it was not recorded. If the other family on the ship was from Affern or Affein, would those villages be close enough together for Johannes and Jasper to be brothers? Thank you!

Hi again I cannot find place names Affern or Affein only Alfen.
Although I live in Germany- I am British and have lived here only a couple of years. Whilst I can manage day to day spoken German my written language is not good. I would not like to inflict it on you. Its the usual problems with Grammar.
I suggest you post a new thread asking for a Translation. There are good German speakers using this forum. If you get stuck then I will gladly do my best for you.
My advice is to stick to Johannes Belken for now- simply because you have a place name that is recognisable and a year of birth.
If you just ask for advice at this stage - you should not be charged by the archives- but if they do any research for you then you will need to pay.
It is certainly helpful that you know they are Catholic. The email address below is for the Catholic church records for Paderborn. Make sure to mention the placename Alfen.
archiv (at) erzbistum-paderborn.de
Hope all goes well.
Sue

Hi Go to this link on Rootschat http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,87676.0.html and I think you will find a few people willing to do some German translation.
I am sure a personal message is in order to see if they have the time.
All the best Sue

Sue, my borther in law wrote this up for me! Do you think it is okay?

Hi Well I can understand it -and if you put an English translation with it - I am sure you will get a kindly reply. It's a lot better than my attempts although I manage to get replies to my enquiries but my grammar is not good and I feel embarassed by it at times.
So many Germans speak very good English but I personally am loathe to keep pushing their goodwill - they in my opinion appreciate a bit of effort from English speaking nations.
I wish you every success. Please let me know how you get on-
Fingers crossed Sue

My interpretation of this message is that there are parish registers from the church of St Michael from 1628 to 1875 which includes Alfen. These books are in a place called the Erzbistumarchiv.
By the sound of it they have sent you an attachment with the email. The attachment I would think would explain more of the research services. I think it says they do not lookup the information you use one of the researchers.
I am sorry as I say my German is still very shaky. Send a PM to Berlin Bob who is a moderator on here. I am sure he will not mind giving you a translation. Sorry to be a bit useless.
Sue

Any ideas on where I can go from here? I went to Family History Center and ordered the film on Alfen Germany. I looked at it twice and haven't been able to pick out the names of the fmaily that I am researching. I thought I could pick out names and the surname in the church records. But I didn't find their names! On the ships manifest , they are listed from Alfen, so now I have hit a brick wall on where to turn now! Any help out there?
