I am hoping to contact family members descended from:
John McCabe & Ellen/Helena Butler of Kilkenny, Ireland or Charles Jarrett & Elizabeth King of the Ballina, NSW region.
John & Ellen had at least 3 children who came to Australia - Patrick, Bridget Thomas & John. Thomas married Harriet Jarrett in 1873 and they had 6 children in the 1870's & 1880's in the Bellinger River area - Ellen, Elizabeth, John, Harriet, Agnes & Thomas.
These children went on to marry into the Gaddes, Mackay, Lyons, Campbell & Tait families.
It would be wonderful to find that there are old photos available somewhere as nothing has ever come down to the present generation.
Any information appreciated,
Regards, Jeff Carroll

Dear Jeff, There is a Historical Society in Bellingen Bellingen Historical Society Council Grounds, Hyde Street Bellingen NSW 2454 Tel. 02 6655 1262
There is also The Richmond River Historical Society, which covers Ballina http://www.richhistory.org.au/
I have looked up the White Pages for Gaddes (as it was the most unusual of the names) and they are still in the Belligen/Nambucca/Grafton area. http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/initResSearch.do
Do you have the births/deaths/marriages for these families? They will be on http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm
Cheers Susie

Hi Susie,
Thank you for your suggestions. I've had contact with the Historical Societies mentioned but have not had a lot of success with information on the McCabe's. Stan McCabe the cricketer was part of the family, as was Bishop Thomas McCabe.
There is significant information regarding Charles Jarrett (his own journals, newspaper columns & at least one book based on his writings). Substantial information is also available for Elizabeth King's family. Some wonderful stories. The RRHS holds a great deal. I also have quiet a few BDM's.
I was hoping this post would reach some of the descendants that may be also dabbling in the family history. If I get no success here I'll consider 'Plan B' of attempting to track down the families more directly - something I don't particularly like to do. Sometimes though, you've got to do what you've got to do.
Many thanks again, Jeff.

Dear Jeff, Some links for Bishop McCabe and a photo from the Illawarra Images (Wollongong Library)
http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bmccabe.html http://unanderraparish.org.au/history.html http://www.military.catholic.org.au/history/history2.htm
There is also heaps on Stan McCabe. Sounds like you have a good deal of information.....just need a relative to come to to fore!
Cheers Susie

Thank you for supplying the photo Susie.....it's the best one I've ever seen of the Bishop. He must have been camera shy!!
Yes, I just seem to skirt 'round the McCabe's - one day someone will pop up.
Best regards, Jeff

Hi Jeff, I am a descendant of Charles Jarrett and Elizabeth King. Haven't been on here long, so I feel really lucky to have been 'found'. My line is: Charles and Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah Anne Jarrett married Donald McCurdy Wells. Their daughter Sarah Anne Wells was my maternal grandmother, and she married Frederick James Kenney. Their youngest daughter is my mother. Unfortunately, I don't have anything in the way of photos etc. My mother's eldest sister was very keen on family history and her findings have stayed with one of her grandsons, though, if I got in touch, I'm sure I could get copies of anything they have. Love to hear from you. Tracey.

And I don't know that I can help you much, Jeff....but the little toddler in my avatar picture is a descendant of Robert Raymond Mackay whose sister Jane Mackay married William Gaddes in 1856!
I really haven't done very much research into my little grandaughter's maternal ancestry yet. Her other grandparents still live in the area you have mentioned.

Thanks Dee, nice to know family is still in the area. If you'd like the information I have, you are most welcome to copies.

Sorry about the delay in my reply, Jeff. I've only just got home again after a few days with my elderly mother.
Your offer is very kind, and maybe I can contact you by PM. Getting back to old photographs, I'll ask my daughter in law if she knows of any old Mackay family photographs.
