Hi folk in Derbyshire, I am looking for information on the death of my x3 great grandfather George Bond, in particular his death. The info I have he was born in 1792, married Mary Bell at Heanor by banns on one set of records on 24/7/1817. Another record includes name Vicar john Thompson. who I have found was Vicar of Heanor (StLawrence I think it is named) from 1788 to 1820. He was a miner and I guess this accounts for his 3 children being born in different places. George must have died prior to 1831 because in January 1831 his wife Mary remarried in Alfreton. Is anyone able to help me with tracing his death date and details. Any help would be much appreciated as i live in NZ and find it difficult to access records. BELLBIRD

Do not know if this is correct one but seems plausible:
Derby Mercury 6th January 1830 Inquest On Friday se`nnight, at Greenhill-Lane, near Alfreton, on the body of George Bond, a collier, aged 47 years. It appeared that the unfortunate man, on the 4th ult. had got in liquor, and returning home rather late, laid himself across the hearth, and fell asleep. After having lain there several hours, he was awoke by his clothes being on fire. His wife and family immediately came to his assistance, and the fire was extinguished, but the deceased was so dreadfully burnt as to survive the event little more than a fortnight. Verdict “accidentally burnt to death”

Morning Dave Thanks for the info you sent re George Bond death. The death date fits well, however the age is 10 years out, he said to be born in 1792. Is there anyway of checking the death entry to find if age in paper is correct and not a typo, is there a death notice in the paper which would list his family, wife Mary, children Martha? Andrew and George. Unfortunately it is too early for Free BMD. Are burials recorded in Parish Records? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated BELLBIRD

Morning Dave I have contacted the Derby Local Studies Library and been told that Parish Registers for Alfreton are not available on line and research of death them would need to be done at the Derbyshire Records Office, the rest of the info is on my request for a lookup for Alfreton Parish Records. To Dave Jones I have been told that Alfreton Parish Records are not available online bu that the Registers for St Martins Church Alfreton are kept at the Derbyshire Reocrd Office, their reference for these is D654 and the registers cover 1706 to 1953 for burials. BELLBIRD

nicola 8100 Morning Nicki thanks for your efforts, poor old George dies from what it would appear "the demon booze" then after the autopsy just disappears, if a home death I suppose they could have popped him in the backyard but I don't know what would have happened to him after the inquest was completed.. Maybe a paupers grave though his wife Mary appears to have to managed somehow as she remarried over a year later, so maybe not. I don't suppose they kept inquest records which might show what happened to him after the autopsy. Strange now, but maybe not then. Dad's family are a problem. His mother's parents were born in Scotland so I am told, I may have found his birth, nothing for the mother until her death in NZ having had 3 children here having died of scarlet fever at Port Chalmers, in an unmarked grave with several others, he applied for bankruptcy and died 3 months later being called Captain White but was a lighterman. Think I've got him arriving in NZ, not her, their marriage or anything else. Spent many hours on the Port Chalmers Passenger lists, he left from Glasgow, so guess she did, maybe if not married then she left later? or travelled out with him, got married on the way. Who knows the mystery of them and them and George continues. Bellbird

Could he have gone to the workhouse and maybe been buried there too? It wasn't unusual for people to be hospitalised within the workhouse.
Just a thought. Nx

Hi there
If you take a look at www.workhouse.org.uk and type in Belper you will get the info re the workhouse. As for the records i would imagine they are at Matlock records office. Also it might be worth mentioning, there is a Greenhill lane cemetary/Parish church, sorry don't know which one it would be but i did come across it when i was llooking for your George but didnt realise it was so close to where he was.
Hope this helps

Afternoon Nicki Thanks for the suggestion re the Belper Workhouse. The site I ended up on said it didn't open until 1895. Will try and find a cemetery for Greenhill Lane or Church and see what happens. BELLBIRD.

Hiya Early this month i said i would help you with this and i went to Alfreton Church cemetary and your George is not buried there,me and my 8 year old daughter scoured the place. I saw a lady who was the steward and she said all records had recently left the church and gone to County Offices Matlock. Looking again George died at Greenhill lane near to this and near to my house is a cemetary at Leabrooks , i wonder if hes there. If i get a spare moment this weekend i will try there for you. Cheers Jules

Hi Jules, Tanks for your idea of the cemetery at Leabrooks, some one else suggested a cemetery and/or Church was in the Greenhill Lane area, wonder if this the one you mention. Must be in my PM file will have a look and if different to the above will get back to you. Bellbird
