Watson/Aitken of Anstruther Easter
« on: Wednesday 22 April 09 16:34 UTC (UK) »

Trying to find the deaths and burial place  of James Watson a ships carpenter and his wife Janet Aitken  they were married in Anstruther Easter in 1819 the last thing I have on them is the baptism in Pittenween Church in 1835 of their son Aitken Watson.
On the 1841 census I have Aitken 5,Alexander 9,Jane15 and Georgina 11 living with their granny Isabella  Aitken [ms Gourlay],her son Alexander 35,daughter Elizabeth 37 on the farm at Carhurly
I know Isabella Gourlay is buried in Carnbee Churchyard along with son Alex and daughter Elizabeth as I have been to the grave. but I would dearly love to find  Janet and James resting place.

Hi Josie

I've just done a search on ScotlandsPeople for deaths 1855-1900 and found TWO matches for a Janet surname Aitken, other surname Watson.  One was in 1875 and the other in 1890.  Based on them getting married in 1819 either one is a possibility but without a year of birth to enter it is a bit vague.  Neither was in Fife, however, but with this information, a search (pay per view £6 for 30 credits and one search costing 6 credits) could be worthwhile.  You could also do a Census search for them for the same 'price'.

Should it be that neither is correct, then it could be conceivable that they emigrated or moved out of Scotland.

I also had a look on the Fife Death Index pre-1855 - lots of James Watsons but no Janets with m.s. Aitken.  None of the James's were 'ho' (husbands of) a Janet either!

Regards

Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Pearson, Laing ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

Josie

If you use this link:

http://www.fife.gov.uk/atoz/index.cfm?fuseaction=service.display&objectid=4524152B-5EAF-4FBB-AC0DC10B384B8758

or copy and paste it into your search engine, then scroll down to For more information contact, there is an online form you can complete for the office in Cupar.  Give as much information as you have and Margaret will give you the date of burial from the Carnbee records and from there you will be able to determine the death date - usually within the preceding 48 hours.

It sometimes takes a day or two to get a reply as it's a busy wee office!

Good luck
