SCOTT Family BALLINA
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 04:22 UTC (UK) »

Seeking help to locate the Irish Roots of Jane Hamilton Frances SCOTT born BALLINA about 1854. The name of her father given on her English marriage certificate is John Hamilton SCOTT,occupation Painter.
A recent TV programme suggests the Ballina church records are available,if so where should I go?
Many Thanks

Norman, you can view all BMD's on:  Not every family is on here, but the majority are.  Mayo was notorious for records - or the lack them. If your referring the the Chris Moyles 'WDYTYA' series, he was just lucky. You could also try ordering film from your nearest LDS Centre.

If it was the Moyles programme. The Church was St Muredach's Cathedral which overlooks the River Moy in Ballina.

Hello,

with Jane being born 1854, it is too early for  birth records and you would be relying on Parish records. You would need a bit moe information, I think.
You would imagine that with the name Hamilton being carried on, it may be a bit easier but it's where to start that is the problem.
Do you know what religion the family would be?

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the only religious clues I have are that Jane married in a Church of England church at Haswell Northumberland and their first born son Hamilton Arthur 1878 became a C of E clergyman.

You would think then that it would be Church of Ireland  Undecided

Just found a strong candidate here:

http://www.mayoancestors.com/default.aspx

You can search by logging in first but then have to pay for full details but I would say it is worth it.

best wishes

Heywood
Thanks for your interest.
I think we must have been working in parallel, for yesterday I saw and downloaded the reference you gave me from BDM Ireland. Its a Methodist Christening at Killala which is about 6 miles from Ballina,Mayo. Father is John Scott(No Hamilton). Separately I discovered an IGI birth of a John Hamilton Scott April 1833 at Dromara Co Down. You can find this birth along with 3 other births attributed to a John Scott and Anne (Edgar).
Could be my family but the IGI record is one of those contributed by a member and in the past I have found them unreliable so I must treat this info with suspicion.
Thanks to you and others the wheels are rotating in a forward direction
Kind Regards

Hello Norman,
the IGI, I haven't seen but as you say, you have to be a bit wary.
However, the BMD sounds good.
I know Killala area a bit - my family are from a few miles away - gorgeous!

Are the other children born Mayo?

good luck

sorry I've just looked and see what you mean now - it is John Hamilton Scott and siblings who are on IGI.
