Two Boys Dying in 1809
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 15:53 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone out there have any historical information relating to Great Coxwell?

I have two brothers - William and Thomas Adams aged 14 and 11 - both being buried in the church yard at Great Coxwell on 2 August 1809.  The vicar was marked the register with the remark that he has reported the incident but does not say what the incident was.

When I found this at the records office I asked about possible newspapers from the time but they didn't think there was anything.  I've also been to the churchyard and found the gravestone but no luck there either!

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Thank you
Amanda

You could try asking at the records office to see if there was an inquest.

Were there any other parish records at the record office?  It would seem worthwhile looking at the vestry minutes if they are available and possibly some of the accounts.

Thank you both for your suggestions.  Wasn't sure when inquests started but its worth a try.  I did ask in general when I was in the records office about whether there would be any way of finding out more but they were a bit vague.

I'll try to go back and ask for more specific records.

Many thanks

The National Archives has a useful leaflet about Coroners' Inquests

Good luck in your search.
