James Aitken/Janet Gillon - Larbert 1820's
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 18:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any information on the family or relations
of this specific couple. Trying to work out if there daughter Helen Aitken,
born Larbert 1822 is the wife of James Steel of Letham, his wife being
born in Larbert around the same time.

Any information that could shed some light on this matter would be
most helpful.

Best regards,

Richard

Hi Richard

Going by location and dates, certainly looks a strong possibility that Helen was daughter to James and Janet. To get full verification, you would need to look at Helen's death cert (if she died in Scotland) to confirm her parents' names.

This looks like information on the Aitken line on the generation that you are looking at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gillon/mom/pafn21.htm

There is also a private member's tree on Ancestry for this line of James Aitken and Janet Gillon, not sure what additional information may be there.

Thanks Monica.

On one of my relations (Margaret Steel) birth cerificate it says here parents
James Steel and Helen Aitken were married on the 19th of July 1844 Airth.

But from information extracted from the IGI its says

James and Helen married/banns  Larbert 14 July 1844 and banns 7 July 1844  in Airth (IGI,extracted)

So a little confused now  Shocked

Best regards,

Hi Richard

They either got their dates wrong on Margaret's birth entry by a few days, or the 7 and 14 July were banns for the marriage and the marriage took place on 19 July. It can be hit or miss on Scotlands People regarding marriage entries in that you don't know whether the entry was for banns or the actual marriage until you look at the image which is a pity.

Their first daughter Helen look to have been born the following month and christened in September that year.

Hi Monica,

Just topped up the credits on Scotlands People a few mins ago and have now found
the death certificate for Helen Aitken.

Turns out.... Father - James Aitken (Farmer) and Mother - Janet Gillon

That's tied up a whole lot of information. Even the signature of the informant is that of here son in law, my great great grandfather.

Best regards,

Richard

That's great Richard  Smiley

Not sure how much you have on Helen's family. If you do a parent search on IGI (let me know if you haven't done this before) you will see a list of Helen and James' children including submitted details for one of their daughter's marriage (Janet I think from memory).

Hi Richard

You have death cert details for James Aitken and Janet Gillon on that link I posted earlier which will help when moving on to the next generation.

Again from what looks to be the same database is this http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gillon/mom/pafn20.htm re the Gillon side taking you back to Robert and Helen, Janet's parents

This looks to be the main page with a contact email that might be worthwhile you following up on  Smiley

Some additional sites on the family lines of Gillon and associated families:

http://hotchkissclan.org/gen/Records/INDIs/II10261.html

And a couple of trees on Ancestry on this lines taking you back to the previous generation.

Richard, plenty on the Gillon side...not so much on the Aitken line that I can see on-line as yet.

Hi Monica,

Thanks once again for the links. Will drop some of the Gillon descendants an email
in a few days, once I've got a bit more time and few more peices of information together.

Yes Rex Hotchkiss's website is very good, several of my ancestors on my fathers side there and just found Gillons from my mothers side. Seems on both sides of my family there is a lot of strong connections to Stirlingshire.

Best regards,

Richard
