Two Derbyshire Soldiers of the Great War COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 21:46 UTC (UK) »

I have 2 photographs of brothers Alfred Kemble Jones and William Jones, both in uniform.  Alfred is definitely wearing the uniform of a regular soldier of the Sherwood Foresters and I have all of his information.  William being his younger brother is, I assume, in the same regiment.  They were originally from Melbourne.  Alfred is marked in his war record as a "Labourer" - he joined up several years prior to the War.  I can find no record for William, other than the 1901 census, which shows Alfred as 7 and William as 6 years old - they had a sister, Doris, then one.  My question is, are there any relatives still left in the area to whom I can return the photos of these gallant 'boys'...are they mentioned on the Melbourne War Memorial? (they were both 'killed in action').  FYI:  It is remotely possible that one or both may have been estate workers - ?Foremark Hall, ?Tissington.

Dear Lydiaann
I think it would be worth getting in touch with 'Derbyshire Lads' who are researching/recording names on the Derbyshire Memorials

http://www.derbyshirelads.uwclub.net/

Also the Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters Museum may wish to have copies of the photos as I believe they are collating an image database

Dear cheshiremog:  (Love the name!)

Thanks so much for that information.  I will try both sites later today and see what transpires.

Dear Lydiaann

And I completely forgot to say "Welcome to Rootschat"
Hope you enjoy your posts - you will find a lot of help here.

We run a village website and record any information we come across about our local servicemen from WW1 and WW2.  We are totally non profit making.  Our chief aim is that these servicemen can be remembered because we know about them and what they looked like.  It is also wonderful to be able to send copies to close relatives who sometimes have never seen them before. This we have done on a number of ocassions - makes it all worth while. Sometimes it takes years before a relative emerges, but they constantly do to our surprise and delight.

best wishes
mog

To cheshiremog:  Well, we finally have details of the 2 brothers; 'Derbyshire Lads' finally identified William and I have his war record.  For those who would like to take a moment, William died on 28 Sep 1918 (7 weeks and 2 days prior to war's end) and Alfred on 17 Oct 1918, just 25 days shy of the Armistice.

We now know that there were 2 sisters: Doris born 1900 and Nellie in 1902.  They were Derby people in 1901 and not still in Melbourne.

I shall continue my efforts to find the family now I have a little more information but will leave the post up in case anyone new should come in and realize they know something.

Best wishes - you will be hearing from me again, no doubt!

What I forgot in my last post was to tell you that William was not in the Sherwood Foresters but in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (I do want to set the record straight - in case it tips someone's memory!) and also died in France.  Both Alfred Kemble Jones' and William Kemble Jones' records can be found under the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.

Dear Lydiaann

You have really taken this forward - 'good on you' and 'good on' the Derbyshire Lads site. I have found sometimes in my research that families lost their only surviving son or sons and so the people who really remember them personally are few.  It is so tragic when that is the case. But they are of interest, I hope to the people of Melbourne.  I often feel priveledged to be able look at my village war memorial - I read a name - I can see their face - and I want to make sure others can as well. So what you have done is very important.

It is possible Nellie Jones married John N Hall in 1925 last quarter in Derby.

Have not found a likely marriage for Doris though.

Wow, you guys are great!  I am now trying to find out if William and/or Alfred married but knowing Nellie's details will be a big help too.  As the men all have 'Kemble' as a second name, it is possible that the girls too had the same 'moniker'.  It is possible that Doris never married - it seems that Nellie was lucky, as a whole generation of young men disappeared off the face of the earth in that awful war.  In the meantime, I have decided that both of these men will become part of our family history and so they are our 'adopted' great-uncles.  All of their details will be recorded in the binders for my family so that they are forever remembered and not 2 of the 'forgotten heroes'.  We have also decided that next time we go to France we will search out their graves and tell them of our quest.  Onward and upward!

This is for Suzard:  Just now had time to get back to the search for William and Alfred Jones and really read your reply which contained the marriage details of Fredrick and Ann Jane...and have just realized that Ann Jane Houghton is my great-aunt!! Duh!! Where was I??  This, of course, makes the 2 boys my mother's cousins.  As the boys are with their family, I really don't need to send the photos back anywhere!  William Houghton, Ann Jane's brother, was my great-grandfather.  To all of you, many thanks.
