I need help
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 23:36 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find information on my ggrandfather Michael R Gannon.  I know that he was born in Mayo (not sure where)  He came to the us in 1898.  He married Mary Chambers then Mary Feighan.  His marriage license to his second wife Mary Feighan says that his father's name is Thomas.  His death certificate says his father's name is Patrick.  I am thinking that maybe it is Thomas Patrick or Patrick Thomas.   Michael's mother's name is Hanora (Nora) Gannon.  I don't think that Michael and Mary Chambers were married in Ireland because she came to the us in 1888 at 12 years old.  I am trying to find Michael's birth records.  Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

In order to help you we really need a bit more information.
When was Michael born?- census records should give an indication of his age if you don't have an exact date.
'Came to U.S. in 1898'- port of arrival (New York, Boston, etc.), date, where did ship sail from? Passenger manifest might have clues like name of nearest relative in U.K., etc.
Where did he live after arriving in U.S.?

He was born abt 1874.  He came over in 1898.  Departed from Liverpool and arrived in New York.    The manifest lists his last residence as Manchester.  When he landed in New York he lkived with his brother Timothy at 450 3rd ave Brooklyn (all of this is according to the ships manifest).  Can't make out the ship's name.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I have a correction....I am a little confused about Michael R Gannon's birth date.  I know that it is between 1872 and 1876 not sure exactly which year. The 1910 Ohio census has him at 37 years old,  but the 1920 Ohio census has him at 45 years old.  I will keep checking and update when I find out for sure.

thanks again,

Michael Gannon arrived on 7 May 1898 on "Etruria"

2 children of Michael Gannon and Mary Chambers who died young (not sure if you have these):
Loretta Gannon born 28 Feb.1910 died 19 July 1910
Baby Gannon born 16 Jan.1911 died 17 Jan.1911

And if this is Michael's death then you've now got father's name and mother's maiden name:
Michael R. Gannon died 14 May 1938 Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio
age 64, spouse Mary, father- Patrick Gannon, mother- Duffy

See here to look at full details available online:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1307272

And even more exciting- if the above death is the correct Michael:
Children of Patrick Gannon and Honor Duffy (born Co.Galway)-
1. Thomas born 8 Oct.1869
2. Timothy born 9 Aug.1872
3. Michael born 28 Dec.1873
4. Patrick born 24 Dec.1874
5. Bridget born 20 Sept.1880 Dugara, Co.Galway

Thank you soooooo much.   I wasn't sure what Michael's father's name was.  His death certificate says Patrick, but his marriage certificate to his second wife said Thomas.  but this does seem to match.  I will let you know if it is correct for my Michael.

thanksagain for your time and help

If the Ohio death record is for your Michael Gannon then his mother's maiden name was Duffy and father was Patrick, and the births I listed earlier are Michael and his siblings.

Index to civil registrations is here (free) but there are quite a few possibilities (the Michael born 28 Dec. could have had his birth registered in Dec.1873 or early in 1874).

thanksaudrey but I am a little confused.  Children of Patrick Gannon and Honor Duffy are Michael, Thomas, Timothy, Patrick, and Bridget?  Is that correct?
Honora Duffy's mother is Bridget?
am I getting this right?

Do you know where I can get a copy of Michael's birth records.  My cousin will not believe me without proof.  He swore that his ggrandfather (Michael;s father) was Thomas.

Thank you sooo much for all your help.  Sorry I am being such a pain.
