Hi Liz
Just posting this in case you can confirm anything on him later. There is only one William Den showing in 1901 (any age/ anywhere in Aberdeen), so happens in Old Meldrum
William Den 77, Inspector of the Poor, b. Meldrum Isabella Webster 35, housekeeper, b. Udny, Aberdeenshire Willimina Webster 12, Daur Of Housekeeper Maggie Webster 11, Daur Of Housekeeper Alexander Webster 9 , Son Of Housekeeper
Address: Albert Rd, Old Meldrum
William Den may have been married to a Thomson? From 1891:
William Den 68, Inspector of the Poor, b. Meldrum Elizabeth Den 70, wife b. Meldrum Jane Thomson 77, sister in law, b. Meldrum Andrew Dickie 77, boarder, Minister of N P Church Elsie Johnston 18,servant

From the previous post on your family www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,376302.0.html we had this 1851 census entry:
John Thompson 72, Farmer (240) Acres Employing, b. Old Deer, Aberdnshire Ann Thompson 68, b. Old Deer, Aberdnshire Jean Thompson 31, daughter b. Meldrum Eliza Thompson 30, daughter b. Meldrum
Address: Tullo, Old Meldrum
I wonder if the Elizabeth who married William Dun on 09 FEB 1858 Old Meldrum was John and Ann's daughter. A late marriage for her, can't see any children from the marriage on the censuses.
Hopefully, someone may have access to the transcription to confirm the details for you.

Liz, FreeCen is a fantastic resource however it is not comprehensive. From the home page, you can check the database coverage for any county/census year, the direct link to this page is www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html
