Is there any way of tracing someone who went into a convent at the age of 19 ? The only info I have is that Nelly, a sister of my Grandmother was a nun at Annecy, Seaford.
I am curious as to why she became a nun when the family were very involved with the Congregational Church.
Grandma was born in 1876 but I dont know when Nelly was born but a guestimate would put her at 19 around the turn of the century.

Hi
I cant answer why Nelly chose to become a Nun - but we might be able to find a more exact birth for her. Have you looked on FreeBMD? Have you got the family with grandma and Nellly as children in 1881/1891? ANd Nelly in her convent in 1901?
If you havent, and want help looking for these, then do give us Nelly's surname and grandmas full name too and we will get hunting for you.

Thanks for your help. I have checked back and Nelly or Elleanor as she was properly named was born in 1873. She was living at home with the family in 1881 but was not with them in 1891. I will check the 1901 census to see if I can find her but I think I`ve tried it before with no luck, so fingers crossed. Sueji

Yes, sorry. Her name was Adams. I`ve checked with Free BMD and cant find any record of her death up to 1901 and I couldn`t find her on the 1901 census. Were nuns counted? Dont they change their names when they take their vows? I`m just waffling as I cant think of any where else to go. Sueji

pretty sure that the census covered the whole population - prisons, hospitals, workhouses, barracks, ships crew in home waters etc.
A nunnery would most likely count as an institution - sometimes people were only shown as initials - havent bumped into one tho....
- so this place was in Seaford ..... we can look by address if you have one ?

Google seems to find lots of references to it being a Convent School ?
ah - looks like she's gonna be elsewhere in 1901, the place didnt become a Convent until 1903 ..
At the beginning of the century, Seaford had only six Roman Catholics. Shortly after, the Bishop of the Diocese of Southwark, Francis Bourne, built a chapel dedicated to St Francis de Sales, located right next to his holiday home, which was called Annecy. In 1903, a group of nuns, called the Sister of Providence, brought it and turned it into a convent and the holiday home into a school.

OMG you do work fast! Right- Mum and Dad were:- William Adams Born1825 in Uffingham Berks. Died in Sussex in 1905. Ellen Eliza Tomlin or Tomlinson Born 1841 in Leeds Yorkshire Died Seaford Sussex 1908
From what I have gathered William worked his way across the country possibly labouring on the railway but his children were born all over the place. Elleanor was born in Notting Hill London. They moved to Seaford some time between 1871 and 1881 and settled there for the rest of their lives. At the age of 76 , William was still working, doing domestic gardening.
I did a lot of this research ages ago and must admit I`d forgotten a lot. I concentrated on the male line and then got side tracked, as you do.
I haven`t done much recently as I was caring for my husband who died in February. So I thought it ime to put all the info I have into some sort of order.

Assuming that she's Eleanor Jane as registered Kensington ?
Thought I had her using Jane as her name, a pupil in Hants - but sadly theres also a Jane registered in Kensington, using a PoB of Notting Hill in the 1891.
I'll have a look at 1901 later - hopefully Liz and/or others will have a try too.
Dont forget to pursue that earlier lead to enquire about the Sisters of Providence via the RC Chuch......

You said they moved to Seaford between 1871 and 1881. Looking at childrens birthplaces it looks like it was 1880/81 as youngest child age 1 bn Somerset.
