Where do I go from here? - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 24 April 09 16:07 UTC (UK) »

Hello all, I am new to family history and am seeking some guidance.

This week, thanks to members of this forum, I found my Great Great Grandparents marriage details.  My G G Grandmother was called Jane Chambers and she was born in County Down in 1841.  The marriage details gave William Chambers as her father and he was a labourer.

Jane married an English soldier in 1863 and settled in England.  All Cenus records state that she was born in County Down.

Using the Ulster Historical Foundation, I have searched for a birth / baptism record and there doesn't seem to be one.

Could she have simply not have been baptised?  What is the likelyhood of her not being baptised? Was this commonplace?

I could only guess at her father's year of birth and could not say where he was born.

So, where do I go from here?

Any suggestions please?

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so there would be no birth certificate for Jane Chambers.
It's quite possible that Jane (born c1841) was baptised in some church but that either the records for the church no longer survive, the records are still in local custody or the event wasn't recorded in the church records.

Where was Jane married? It was conventional for marriages to take place near the bride's family home.

Her marriage cert. should state where she lived at the time of marriage. I have found a few of my ancestors travelled from the town where they lived to be married in Belfast.

Thank you Dee,

I have a printout of the details of her marriage, so I shall look into obtaining the certificate to see if there is anymore information on it as you suggest.

thank you

The certificate will give the residence of the bride (and of the groom) at the time of the marriage which may, or may not, be the place where they were born or their families were living.

Where do I obtain marriage certificates from regarding marriages in Ireland?

Depends on several things. Civil registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). You can search index to civil registrations by looking up bride and groom and then cross-referencing to make sure details match before attempting to order a certificate.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
If you find the marriage in the index there are several ways to order the certificate. GRO is one:
www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm
If it was a Catholic marriage earlier than 1864, or other marriage before 1845 then you need to find a church record (if it exists).
