Hi Bob
I think you have the right place, and I think at least some, if not all of Backhouse('s) Walk may still be there. I can't tell if you can get out at both ends though.
I've had a good luck at what I've got on old maps and the pretty recent street map. This little area always fascinates me, and when you look at the civil engineering in that little area it's quite amazing - in fact who needs the pyramids?
I was reading one bit that said that the city centre and Court Square were reached from Denton Holme by Borough Street and that eventually it had to be reached by a tunnel.
Looking at today's street map:
- If you go down towards Viaduct Estate you can go under the railway, and turn left to the car park or right to the station.
The end of the car park is only just to your left, so in fact the road to the right is English Damside until you come to where you go under the viaduct.
Hadn't thought about that being where I was before, but from that point on is still Borough Street, up to Court Square.
I've noticed before though:
Going back to the turning from Viaduct Estate Road, under the railway, almost as soon as you turn right, there is a steep lane joining on the left.
It looks to go a little way up the hill and then turn right at right angles, and run along to join Caldew Brow.
Can't think where though. There is a side door to one of those furniture shops, or maybe it goes into a hotel yard and car park as well as the club? Must explore some time quieter than today!
So if the school was between Backhouses Walk and West Walls it looks as if it's back door would have been on Backhouse's walk. I wonder if it's one on those old buildings? Photo's coming up! [li][/li]
I think you were right with your loop!
Think I'll start a new post before every one turns dizzy or gaga!

Excellent!
So where I thought it looked as if the road came to a stop on my map, it actually also goes under the viaduct!
So that will be the secod steep lane joining on the left, acttually on Borough Street which looks as if it has a gap in it opposite Backhouse's walk end, where really it goes under the viaduct. It looks as if the entrance from the viaduct may have been staggered to be opposite West Walls.
Have I got it right? So do I gather the top of that lane actually climbs although it looks flat on the map? We need those panoramic maos like they have in Switzerland!
Thank you Bob, you've satisfied my curiosity until I have chance to go.
Little and Ballantyne? I really envy you having seen that before it was built on!
Best wishes

Hi Goeffe
That's a brilliant link, thank you! We had great fun on there, earlier!
By the way, I don't know how it can be a foreign land when you come up with so much brilliant info!
I was surprised to see you in Lincolnshire though!
Best wishes

Hi Goeffe and Bob
Thank you both for all the info. Goeffe, thank you! All your input is really appreciated.
This is the view from the side! Don't know if these will fit but on the original you can just about see gaps between buildings. A bit dull, but I grabbed a few pics in case they put hoardings up!
Here goes! If it doesn't work I'll try it in the morning!
Best wishes

Try againtomorrow!
It keeps telling me there's already an attachment of the same name as I'm putting up!
I think it's tired!

Hi Bob
Thank you. Yes, I'd forgotten. We used to go in there loads when we first came and lived in town. I should try it again.
And it evidently helped the local history along!
I've given up on the others for the moment.
Whenever I try to upload them it gives me the same message - that an attachment of that name already exists - they've had three different names each now!
Best wishes

Hi Thanks to Tati, Caldew Brow above, hopefully West Walls on the other side of those buildings! Non unique attachment name. I thought they would be, but added date to make it more unique and it worked!
Steps going down to English Damside on the right, looks like Backhouse Walk runs behind these on map.
Best wishes
