hiya im doing a project in carlisle on a street called back houses walk . does anyone have any maps or information on that street and the surrounding streets ?

Liz, Welcome to rootschat 
if you emailed the local Library they'd almost certaily have info on that street and its surrounds. I've always found the local libraries most helpful.
Google for the libraries' email address.

im just trying to find out when it first started out really . im guessign sometime in the earlry 1800's or late 1700's . I also want to try and find out when the central plaza hotel was built (earlier know as the central hotel) , and carlisle bed shop (dont know what it was before it opened sometime in the 1990's .

About the shop, theif you live locally maybe the shop can tell you... if not maybe nearby shops or the local post Office's oldest empleyye would know- if you're in luck.
the other points , including about the hotel, will be known by the closest Local Studies library- they really are very helpful. Try them next

Hi Liz
You're in for an interesting time if you start on the surrounding streets, as some of the other Rootschatters have hinted!
Between the building of the railway and the station and the viaduct and bridges being built, and the streets which had to be rearranged the get the railway, station and viaduct on the right level, and also knocking a space in English Street to get at the viaduct, it's interesting!
If you're close to Carlisle, take a look at some of the books of old photo's in there.
As far as the Central Hotel and the Bed Centre go, I can't remember which on that row is the Bed Centre today, but looking at that row from the right end, this is the point where a "Hole" was made in English Street where the old Bush Hotel was.
Then New Bush Hotel was built facing a different way, later the Nat West Bank, moving along to Carrs' Offices and Coopers Stores, the Viaduct Hotel, then the Central Hotel. The very tall ornate building at the other end was Little and Ballantynes' Seedsmen.
It's interesting to look from the other side from the train or below, or across from Lidl's cap park and you can see all the diffewrent levels and the different aged bouildings, including the most recent edifice - part of the flood defences.
Look in almost any of the old photo books. I'll emeil you the ones I've used.
I can't remembver all the details for Backhoiuses walk, but why not look in some old directories. There are some on line, mentioned in the other post, and some in the library.
A very interesting exercise would be to look on some censuses. This would show small shopkeepers and private house holders, and the size of house hold and all sorts.
They're all online at Ancestry - - but 1881 you can see free, also free to view in Carlisle and loads of other libraries. Try a couple of years. The librarians will help you find the street.
You'll get loads of help here too.

Hi Again!
I've been looking at my old map sections.
Backhouse's Walk is shown on the 1865 OS as running parallel to West Walls, but further down. Eg. Central School opens onto both West Walls and Backhouse's Walk.
So looks like the edge of the car park now. I wonder if the steps were parts of buildings off it?
Backhouse's Court is off it.
That area fascinates me. I did have some photo's looking down there, but they may be on the old computer that blew in the power cut that came with the floods!
I'll have a look.

Bob, interestingly, looking at your Old Directories post, which has Backhouse's Lane in 1829, my Pigot's 1829 has Walk at that date!
Just to confuse the issue!

I don't have that bit on 1865, but in 1821, before the railway it was Caldew Brow. I think it would have joined what goes down the hill now. There's a Brown's Lane or something on the other side too. I think it might still be Caldew Brow but continuing over the top.
I'll see what I've got.
