At the far side of chapmans, between them and the next building, isn't there a lower level something that you can look down into? Might drop by today.

Another toy for map-o-philes - of no use to this thread at all probably - http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

When you have found the place you want, clicking the red "C" at the top of the left hand map will get you an old map.  Unfortunately, the Carlisle map is very blurred Sad

To get a larger scale map, click on "25k" at the top then click on a point on the map or photo.

Short sighted idiot that I am. Tesco is next to Chapmans. But. But. I have walked Backhouses Walk! The subterranean gap I meant was between the hotel and the Bed Centre. On the other side of the road is a set of steps at the side of what was the BMW garage then a bedroom shop - it sorta dangles over the drop. At the bottom of the steps you go back under the bridge and the road wanders along the side of the hotel, then the back of the Twisted wheel and finally gets to the steps at the sally port in west walls. At no point is there a road/street sign but there were some other interesting features. A double door with "British Paint Co." on it How long since that was taken over? Then a very narrow alleyway down to English Damside - unfortunately blocked by a padlocked gate. I feel like a real adventurer!

Hi Emms,
hope Its okay I have printed a couple of these pictures off to put in my family history book Its strange to see where my family were living and how the living conditions were bad , I dont think they lived there long as there next child was born in leeds in 1848 which makes me think william maybe worked on the railways he was on the birth certificates as a labourer and in 1851 living in market hill wigton
I am going to try to visit the area in the summer when I have time off work

lynne, if you're coming up you could do backhouse walk (100 yards) and wigton - they are only 10 miles apart. It's a pity you don't have a number for ggg grandad as I would try and find it for you. I've got my sandwiches and flask packed but SWMBO (and isn't interested in the boards but I've got her back to 1500's) is dragging me to france for halfterm.  Heeelp!

Hi bob,
had another look at birth certificate for alfred taylor but there is no house number on it or on the census in 1851 for william taylor ,could I ask you on the birth certificate for alfred  it states wiliam taylor as the dad and mary taylor formerly topping the mam ,mind you i have yet to find a marriage for william taylor and mary topping even paid gro for a search so i have given up looking for it I think everyone on rootschat tried to find it so maybe they did not marry , But mary topping  was born 1823 in wigton according to the census ,and in the 1841 census she is living at hudsons court and is a cotton weaver do you know which cotton mill she would have worked in

Lynne, according to Mannix's directory of 1847 (the closest I could get to 1841) there were 3 "check and gingham manufacturies" in Wigton. Henderson and Banks (possibly Banks, Henderson and Banks), Water St., Edw. Fidler & Co, Old Jane(that's what I read but I suppose it could be Lane) and Jsph. Pattinson, Church St. I suppose from Geoff's maps you could work out which was the closest and hope.

Nobody has been to the house since October so it will be a week of work (followed by a glass or two) Smiley
