Marley from Dungarvan

I wondered if anyone could help me.  I am researching the family history of a friend and have found an ancester called John Marley.  He moved to England, but on his Army records, he gives his birth as 1850 in Dungarvan.  I really don't know where to look or what to do.  His marriage certificate gives his father's name as Hugh Marley, but this is all I have.

I had a look at Slaters Directory of Waterford 1846, and there was no Marley in it.
