The lost Ada Catherine Dickenson SKINNER and David ALLEN
« on: Saturday 25 April 09 10:49 UTC (UK) »

Dear Roots Chatters

I wonder if anyone can help trace the missing history of one of my great aunts.

She was born in Newton (nr. Bingham) in 1867 and christened Ada Catherine Dickenson SKINNER.  The daughter of Leonard Skinner and Mary Jane (nee Dickenson).

She married at Nottingham Register Office on 25 April 1889 as follows :-

David Allen, 31 years, bachelor, Farm Labourer of 11 Chapel Yard, Byard Lane, Nottingham - father Charles Frederick Allen (deceased)
Ada Catherine Skinner, 21 yrs, spinster, no occupation, of 11, Chapel Yard, Byard Lane, Nottingham - father Leonard Skinner, Farm Labourer
Witnesses, Annie Boon and Betsy Skinner (Ada's sister)

A son Leonard Allen was born the same year but died at nine months old and was buried in Shelford on 1 July 1890

Ada is in Newton on the 1871 and 1881 censuses and appears on the 1891 census in her father's house, in Newton, as Ada C. Allen "married".  There is no David Allen shown.

I have been unable to trace anything to do with David Allen either prior to or after his marriage.  Great Aunt Ada vanishes after 1891.

If anyone can throw some light on what happened to the pair I should be really grateful.

Hi,

Is emigration a possibility?  I "lost" a brother and sister from one family and found they had emigrated together to Canada.

I found them on www.ancestorsonboard.com, which covers 1890-1960; free search then pay to view.

She could have remarried also. There are several Ada Allen marriages post 1891 on Freebmd Smiley

Hi Malc,
I know it's no consolation but I can't find David Allen, before, after, or anywhere.
My only thought is that he might be one of those ones with just initials (patient).
Good luck - you do have an elusive lot! One day!
Take care,

Hi Paulene,

Another of my brick walls !

Thanks for checking for me.   In a way it's reassuring to know that I have not missed something obvious.

I'll keep on "rooting" and maybe they will turn up somewhere or other !!
