John's parents are showing as having married on 22 NOV 1872 in Dunfermline, Fife. One daughter's birth shows the following year on IGI:
Isabella Wood born 11 JUL 1873 in Aberdour, Fife
From the 1881 census, John looks to have been born c. 1876 also in Aberdour. By 1881 the family were in Midlothian:
William Wood 42, Colliery Fireman (Underground), b. Edinburgh Isabella Wood 30, b. Dunfermline, Fifeshire Isabella Wood 7, b. Aberdour, Fife John Wood 5, b. Aberdour, Fife Elizabeth Wood 3, b. Aberdour, Fife
Address: Gowkshill, Cockpen Midlothian
By 1891, possibly mother has died:
William Wood 52, coal miner, b. Piers Hill, Mid Lothian Isabella Wood 17, Mantlemaker, b. Fordell, Fifeshire John Wood 15, coal miner, b. Fordell, Fifeshire Elizabeth Wood 13, sewer, b. Fordell, Fifeshire William Wood 9, b. Gouges Hill, Mid Lothian Agnes Wood 7, Gouges Hill, Mid Lothian Richard Wood 3, b. Crosgates, Fifeshire
Address: Back St, Dunfermline
Can't easily see John in 1901, maybe the period when he was in the army?

Can't easily see a marriage as yet for John Wood and Isabella Porteous, but there is a death for her:
1938 Isabella Rodger Wood/Porteous, age 49, in Dunfermline

Sarah, I'll post this in case you manage to trace John's military history. There is an entry in the English 1901 census, for a John Wood, 23, born in Scotland. He is a Private in the Scots Guard, and is a patient at Station Hospital, Rochester Row, St George Hanover Square , London.
No certainty that it is him, but thought I would post it in case.
