Hi,

Can someone please look up a baptism and a marriage for a John COOPER?

The only information I have on him is from the 1851 England Census which says his birthplace is Ashwell County, Rutland abt.1784.

So you don't know of any kids or his occupation?

No such place as Ashwell County as far as I know.

Ashwell is a village (and civil parish) about 5 miles north of Oakham in Rutland.

Hi,

I have the Ashwell transcribed parish reocrds, and there are no baptisms for a John Cooper around 1784. There is a Sarah Cooper 11/8/1776, daughter of Francis & Mary, who married 1/10/1775 Ashwell - Mary's maiden name was Freeman. Maybe that is his family and he is missing from the records. More likely, he was born somewhere else and his family moved to Ashwell during his childhood. I couldn't find a marriage either but the Ashwell PRs only go up to 1812. Sorry,

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I wasn't 100% sure that he was born in Rutland, I thought I'd try this board as the only information I have on John is from the 1851 Census.

On this Census it has one of his children Hannah Hopkins (nee COOPER) who was born at Long Sutton Lincolnshire so maybe he moved there when he was married.

His occupation shows him as a farmer with 40 acres at Tydd St Giles age 67.

So would it not be better to look at Long Sutton baptisms for Hannah (WHICH YEAR?) to see if a mother's name appears? and work from that?

Hi Pauline - I think the other Debbie is off line now,

I found them in 1851, Hannah is by then married but she is with her dad (it appears she married Joseph Hopkins in 1840), Hannah would have been born around 1819. They are in Tydd in Cambridgeshire in 1851, John says he is married but his wife isn't with them, However I found John aged 55 with Mary aged 55 and another child aged 15(female) that I can't read the name of in 1841.

Long Sutton is supposed to be in the IGI for that period but I couldn't find a baptism for Hannah, and it appears she and hubby and 3 kids emigrated in 1855 so no chance of picking them up later for an alternative birthplace or more clues

Hi Debbie & Pauline,

I checked the IGI for anything on the COOPERS and couldn't find a lead so that's why I tried this board because it had John Cooper's birthplace as Ashwell, County of Rutland on the 1851 Census.

Haven't had much luck with finding a baptism for Hannah so will take Pauline's advice and put a posting on the Lincolnshire board. I'd really like to find a baptism for her as she died on the voyage out to Australia and I have searched everywhere for a record of her death and keep coming up empty handed. I 'd like to find out if she had any siblings as well.

I didn't write to post on another of the boards.
You could look at transcribed baptisms yourself.
even if "Hannah" isn't there you could try for siblings...
