What town am I ?
« on: Sunday 26 April 09 23:32 UTC (UK) »

Ruth Marriot was born about 1831 in New B   ford, Nottinghamshire. She died 01/10 /1898 at Willowby, New Zealand aged 67 years. What town (s) did she wander away from? (Sometimes it is difficult to read death certificates.)

Hello and welcome,

My semi-educated guess is "New Bedford".  It doesn't show up in current lists on Google (search "towns in Nottinghamshire"), but a few other records show it is or was a town there.

Could be New Basford?

"New" - is pretty popular word around here
We have Eastwood and New Eastwood
We have Westwood and New Westwood
We have Brinsley and New Brinsley
and many others that elude me

Forgot to say
they are not towns or parishes within their own right
Just new parts within or attached to the old parts
Very small districts within a town or catchment
And not so new - not any more

If her parents were John and Mary, then she was living at 8 Dove Yard, Basford in 1851.

Thanks Jennifer. The death certificate copied at 200% could read as that.
The DC mentions her father as John and her mother nee  ? Brittel.
Kind Regards, Brian.

Hello Brian…. Smiley

Here is a little information to help; I can’t see a baptism for Ruth or any of her other siblings, I wonder if they were christened at another non–conformist chapel? It was lucky that the baptism for Thomas mentions Mary’s maiden name which helped find them on the census.

From the NFHS index;

Marriage - Basford St Leodegarius
JOHN MARRIOTT & MARY BRITTLE – 20th March 1831

Possible baptism for daughter Sarah
Baptism - Basford St Leodegarius
