Taylor family of hayfield/Glossop
« on: Monday 27 April 09 13:54 UTC (UK) »

I have been tracing this branch of my family and am stuck trying to find the birth of my 2x Great Grandfather Joseph Taylor. The family lived in the hayfield and Glossop area in 1841,51 and 61 and I expected to find a birth entry in that area. I sent for the one certificate that seemed to  match but it was the wrong one. All the rest of the births were in the Belper district.
Are there any baptism records that could be searched to at least find his Mothers name. He could  have been born anytime between 1843 and 1851, as he age fluctuates on each census.
His Fathers name is Robert taylor and his Mothers name is Jinney or jane.

Hi,

I have had a very quick look on census to find a Robert with a Jane/Jinney without success.

Could you please post details of the Census which contains Joseph Taylor?  This will save
a lot of searching.

You say all other births were in the Belper area, do you mean the birth of his siblings?  If
this is the case are they the children of Robert Taylor and Jane Wheeldon?

Any information you have found will assist.

Regards
Spendlove.

Thankyou for your reply.  Smiley
I have found Robert Taylor and "Jinney" on the 1841 census living at Littlemoor, Glossop with their Daughters Sarah aged 7 and Mary aged 2. ( Although it says Nancy it is in fact Mary) I haven't searched for the birth of any siblings. All the Belper births were for Joseph Taylor in various years.
I asumed that as they were living in the Hayfield and Glossop registration district for the census's that were at either side of my 2xGreat grandfathers birth that he would have been registered there. There are only 2 births registered in the Hayfield/Glossop district one in 1842 and the other in 1851. I discounted the Belper ones as I didn't think they would be relevant. I sent for the one in 1842 and it was the wrong one. So now I have no idea how to get back on track and find out more about this family.

Hi,

I think this is the same family in the 1841/1851/1861 Census info you gave.  Robert Taylor
is consistant when giving his age, occupation and place of birth.  The difference in his age
in the 1841 Census is because in this census only adult ages were rounded DOWN by up to
4 years.  The date the various census were taken may also explain the slight difference in
ages for some of the children.  I give the date the various census were taken, in case you
do not have this info:-
UK CENSUS DATES
===============

Midnight. Sun/Mon. 6/7th June 1841
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 30/31st March 1851
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 7/8th April 1861
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 2/3rd April 1871
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 3/4th April 1881
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 5/6th April 1891
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 31/1st March / April 1901
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 2/3rd April 1911
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 19/20th June 1921
Midnight. Sun/Mon. 26/27th April 1931 (Destroyed in W.W. II)
** There was no Census taken in 1941 **

There is a Bpt for Sarah Taylor on the IGI Born 14.4.1834, Bpt 19.8.1834 St. Marys Independent,
Glossop  Father Robert Taylor Mother Jane Massey.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

I cannot see a marriage for Robert & Jane, I cannot find a Bpt for any of the other children, However
there is Birth Registration on Free BMD  March Quarter 1839 Hayfield  for a Mary Taylor.  if you purchase this certificate, in the hope it is your Nancy/Mary, you will confirm that Jane Massey is the Mother.
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Regarding the registration of Joseph Taylor. If you take the details from the 1851 Census i.e.
the census nearest to his birth, he was born about 1845.  In March Q 1845 on free BMD there
is a whole batch of persons named Joseph Taylor who have not been transcribed fully.  You
need to look at the original entries on Ancestry to see if one of these is yours.
Another suggestion is that Robert Taylor Born 5.12.1803 Bpt. 1.2.1804 Father Josh. (Joshua)
and Emy at St. Marys Independent, Glossop is probably your Robert - so was his son registered
as Joshua but called Joseph?

Sorry not actually solved your problem, but hope some of this is of assistance.

Many thanks for all your hard work Smiley. I have searched the birth indexes on "Find my Past" to double check that their was no Nancy Taylor born in the Hayfield district, there wasn't any, so I am satisfied that it is Mary and not Nancy on the 1841 census. I will send for the birth certificate and see if the Mothers name is Massey.
I did a search between 1842 and 1851 for the birth off Joseph Taylor and there were 7 in the Belper and also the Hayfield/Glossop registration district. I sent for the one registered in the Hayfield district in 1842, but it wasn't the right one Cry
The only other one in Hayfield is in 1851. I also looked for a Joshua Tatlor between 1842 and 1847 and there are non in Derbyshire, so I am satisfied that he was called Joseph from birth....whenever that was!

Was Wirksworth anywhere near Glossop, I see that it is in the Belper Registration district and if it is quite close to GlossopI wondered if they could have possibly lived there between the Cenus's

Hi,

Do not consider that Wirksworth or Belper registration district NEAR to Hayfield/Glossop, if you look
Glossop/Hayfield are very near to adjoining Counties these may be worth considering for Birth Registration.  It is also important to remember that not all Church Registers are on IGI especially those of Independent Faiths.
For instance St. Mary's  Independent, Glossop on the IGI does no include the years you are searching for.
The following information is taken from:-
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

 (Saint Marys Independent) C066721   1820-1837
 C066722   1786-1804
 C066723   1804-1820
Using this site also cuts out all the Parton Submitted Items which appear on the IGI.

This is also a connection to Glossop/Hayfield Registers:-
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=448&documentID=464&pageNumber=19

It is also important to understand about occupations and the districts they occurred.  The town of Belper
was a Cotton Spinning Town, Wirksworth lead mining, quarries etc.  Have you taken a look
at what factories existed near to Whitfield/Glossop because by this late date I am sure Robert would have been
employed in a factory and not working as a weaver at home.

Perhaps some kind person would do a look up for you in the St. Mary's Parish Registers Glossop, I assume these
are held at County Record Office Matlock but you need to check with that office what they hold and what dates
the registers cover.

I have sent for the certificate, I found a Mary Taylor registered in the June Q of 1838 and another one in the March Q of 1839.....as there is very little between the dates, I decided to ring up and get them to check which is the right one using the Mothers maiden name of Massey as a reference checking point.

When it arrives I will let you know. I am very grateful for your help and with a bit of luck maybe I can make some progress with this branch of the Family.
Many Thanks
Joan

The certificate arrived this morning....Mary Taylor born 12th February 1839 in what looks like Hollingcross lane, daughter of Robert and Jenny Taylor nee Massey. Robert was described as a powerloom weaver, he registered the birth on 20th February and signed his name with an X, under that it also says Whitfield.

Thankyou once again for your help. I think I might join the Derbyshire Family History Society and see if I can make contact with anyone who maybe tracing the same Family line as me.
