Nicolson of Denny
« on: Monday 27 April 09 15:47 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in finding out about William Nicolson who lived nr. Denny He died from wounds in world war 1 and is buried in Denny Cemetery. His father John and his brother Malcolm I have plenty of information on but his other siblings are a mystery.  His mother Dorothea may also be buried in the same place as she died in 1918 abt one year after William.

Hello Lilian,

Welcone to Rootschat!

There is a photo of Pte. Nicolson's Family stone on the Scottish War Graves Project Website - Denny & Dunipace Thread, Page 2: (Names are listed alphabetically, so just scroll down til you find him)

http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=253&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&mforum=scottishwargraves

He is listed (as Nicholson) on both of Denny's War Memorials - one in the Cemetery and one in the Town Centre. The plaques on each of these memorials are identical.

The MI on the stone reads:

"In loving memory of Pte. W. NICOLSON, 2nd Scots Guards
Who died at Stobhill 25th September 1916 aged 26 years
Also his mother DOROTHEA STEWART THOMSON beloved wife of John Nicolson
Who died 30th December 1918 aged 72 years
JOHN NICOLSON who died 16th September 1919 aged 73 years"

To verify who else is buried there, you'd need to contact the Cemeteries Office. If you quote Section C, Grave 439, (which is the reference from the CWGC Debt of Honour Database), it'll mean their search is easier. (Don't hold your breath though, they're not exactly know as the quickest off the mark)

Have you found the family in any Census?

Anne

thanks so much for that information.  John and Dorothea were my grandparents and I ma trying to find out about his children, other than my grandfather.  This is the first time I have seen the grave.  One question though. I have published via Blurb.com a book about my family which includes all of these people.  Do you know how I can  get permission to use these photographs?
