Marham Lodge - Marham
« on: Monday 27 April 09 16:49 BST (UK) »

I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me where Marham Lodge might have been.

I'm assuming that it was possibly a lodge cottage attached to Marham House but can't locate it on any old map.  I have a family member who is shown in the 1854 White's Directory as being "gardener and steward" and the address is Marham Lodge.  I have him on the 1851 census living in Marham as a gardener having moved there via Stoughton in Sussex from Tadcaster in what was the West Riding.  By 1861 he was in North Elmham and lived there until his death in 1897 where he was a nurseryman and seedsman.

Thanks

BumbleB,

Hmmm... Looked high and low on several old maps with no success.

On a more recent (1963) 1inch OS map there is a "Marham Hall" shown, complete with moat! - Possible connection there perhaps.

If you search the Norfolk Online Access to Heritage site http://www.noah.norfolk.gov.uk/QSearch.aspx for Marham Lodge there are no hits. However a search for Marham House or Marham Hall (they have to be two separate searches, ensure you select All Collections) returns several - may be worth trawling through some of those.

Regards, Paul

Thanks for trying Paul.  I did try the old maps and couldn't trace it as a named property.  I guess it was probably just a cottage, probably at the entrance to the estate.  Where I came from in Cheshire we had a large estate and there were cottages forming part of the gated entrance.  Ah well, it would have been nice to know.

Again thanks
