Templemore, Tipperary - Lookup help please.

Hi,

here's hoping that some kind person who lives in or near Templemore could do a lookup in the RC Parish Records  for me please.

I'm trying to trace the baptism/birth of my Gt Grandmother:

Hannah (or Anna?) Carroll, believed born in or around Templemore, between 1864 - 1869.
Her father's name was Martin Carroll - a farmer.

Also the baptism/birth of Hannah's son William (Carroll?) Jones,
believed born Templemore area 1885.

I have tried in vain (and with a lot of expense) to trace both Hannah & Williams birth, which includes applying to the GRO Roscommon for a search and commissioning expensive research through the 3  appropriate offices in  Tipperary, Nenagh and Mallow -  but with no success.

It is believed that my Gt Grandmother met my Gt Grandfather John Jones in Templemore in 1884/5.They marrried in Fermoy in Sept 1885.

R C Parish Records are my last hope of tracing back to my Gt Grandmother's family.

Please help if you can, I've been trying to find these records for such a long time.

have you tried the familysearch Irish Civil index ?

I'd start the search with William and work backwards...these are two possible matches from the index :

Name: William Jones
Reg district: Tipperary                   type: Birth
year: Jul - Sep 1885
Volume: 3 / pg: 536

Name: William Michael Jones
Reg district: Nenagh
Record type: Birth
date : Oct - Dec 1884
Volume: 3 / page: 462

To check the rest of the details you have to order a cert from the GRO using the Name, registration district, year/quarter , volume and page.

Hi Shane,

Really nice to hear from you. You were very kind in helping me last August, when I was new to Rootschat.

Yes, I had tried the Family Search .org but I couldn't come up with anything.

The first of the possible matches you have found may well be the right one.

My Gt Grandfather John Jones didn't arrive in Templemore until Oct 1884, he then moved to Fermoy in July1885 and married my Gt Grandmother in Sept 1885.

I suspect it may be that William was born just before their marriage which would fit with the Registration date,quarter & year of Jul - Sept 1885, that you have found.

How did you find it Shane? I must be doing something wrong somewhere along the line.

I've just tried again and I still cannot find the information that you have found.

This is the first time I've felt any hope in my search for William . I'm almost afraid to hope that this is it !!

I know it's difficult to be sure if it is the right person without knowing the mother's name but I've been trying to find William for so long and have spent such a lot of money doing it that I feel I've got to have this one last shot at it.

I only concentrated on the registration districts in Co. Tipperary for those results. I'll think about your timeline for William and Hannah/Anna  try another slightly wider search .. just to be sure.

there are some tips on searching the civil index here : http://www.rootschat.com/links/05hn/

basically the trick is to get an idea of the possible registration districts, start a wide search ... the narrow it down using the collection, place, years options.

you seem to be better off starting with too many results which you can then narrow down.

Hi Shane, Thanks for your reply.

I've just been looking back through my records and I found that I had looked on the Irish Family History Foundation site last year and paid to view the Civil Birth Record of a William Jones whose birth/baptism was 20 July 1885, Parish/district Tipperary, denomination Civil Parish.

Unfortunately,the parents showed as William Jones & Margaret Ryan -  not my John Jones & Hannah Carroll.

Obviously there's no way of telling from the index you found if it is the same record that I viewed.

I'm sure that my Gt Grandmother was RC and would have baptised her son in the same faith, as she did her further 2 children later.

I'd just have to take a chance I guess !!

This is such a long haul but I'd love to find William and then maybe Hannah.

these are the registration districts :

Templemore Town = Thurles
Fermoy Town = Fermoy

adjacent to Thurles  :
Nenagh, Roscrea,Tiperary, Cashel, Castlecomer (*)

adjacent to Fermoy  :
Michelstown, Clogheen, Lismore, Youghal
Midleton, Cork, Mallow

and the registration districts in-between :
Clogheen, Kilmallock

These are the William Jones matches from in and around the Thurles district from the Civil Indexes 1845-1958 :

(edit - removed results, incorrect years... updated below...)

if the parents were unmarried and William was registered under his mothers surname it makes the search more difficult - as there are many William Carroll registrations.
