Hi Gravity,
Have you looked for the marriage and children's births on freebmd site?
As you know John married an Elizabeth that will help identify the marriage... also if you checked the 1841/51 census etc you would find out more about them.

Hi Gravity
Can you give us the reference for the 1881 census to help find other census returns. Also do you have any birth certificates for any of John and Elizabeth's children, they will give you her maiden name.

Hi Gravity
You're right they are expensive but ordering at least one gives you another option apart from marriage cert to find mother's maiden name.
Anyway I have found the 1871 census RG10 1084 10 13 again in Brighton
John doesn't know his place of birth and Elizabeth has Hampshire

Ok so if Laura was born 1865 in Brighton, might this be a possibility for the marriage.

Hi Gravity
Am I right in thinking you have John's possible birth c1833 from 1881 census.
My theory is that his age on that census is incorrect.
The 1871 quoted above has him as born 1843.
I then found an 1861 census RG9 612 16 9 at Coldwaltham, just down the road from Pulborough of an Edmund White age 44 and son John age 16, ag lab born Pulborough.
So I went and had a look at the Sussex Family History Group PR database and found the following:
John White baptised 1845 29 January to Edmund and Lucy White at Pulborough.
What do you think?

Hi Bev
Alfred is on the 1871 census that I found as a child of 11 years old so that appears to fit but his age is obviously wrong on that one. Good grief your'e right about it being tricky and its usually the less complicated surnames that cause problems.

Do the children's name on the 1871 and 1881 census fit with what you have?

In the 1871 Census looking at the image it looks like he is 38 which makes it 1833.
So just to recap from the 1881 Census we have them living in Blackman Street Brighton John White Public Lamplighter age 48 (b 1833) Sussex Pulboro Elizabeth White age 51 (b 1836) Plymouth Devon Laura J White age 16 John G age 14 Kate age 12 Ellen L age 9
Mary L Bryant Daughter ? age 26 (Wifes child pre marriage?) Children all born in Brighton
In 1871 we have them living in Vine Street, Brighton. John is still a lamp lighter.
New addition Alfred age 11 (born 1860) brighton.
In 1861, fitting in with Kerry's info on the marriage we have Elizabeth Tribe widow age 32 born in Hampshire Son William 10 born Hampshire Daughter Mary 5 born Brighton Son Alfred 2 born Brighton
So I think this confirms the marriage of John White to Elizabeth Tribe.

Arr that explains why I can't find them on the 1861 swebby!
So I wonder if Earwaker was her maiden name, if she a widow. I did note she was older than John

In the 1891 Census they live in Ellen Street, Hove.
John is widowed. (still a lamplighter) Ellen is with him as well as Laura age 9 born Brighton a grand-daughter.
In 1901 John is in the home of his son in law in North Gardens, Brighton.
Ellen has married Henry Hull age 33 postman born Brighton. They have the following children: Henry age 7 John 5 Albert 2 months
