Could be going off on a West Hoathly wild goose chase but there is an Edward Marchant baptised 1 DEC 1776 parents Hugh and Sarah. This Edward has a sister Elizabeth who appears to have an illegitimate daughter Lydia 15 APR 1792. This Lydia Marchant then appears to have an illegitimate son Henry baptised West Hoathly 17 JUN 1810
Just thinking tangentially could your Henry be son of Lydia and so Edward's grand nephew rather than son? Worth investigating??

Thank you for all these replies. I don't think that Henry is Lydia's son as a Sarah Marchant was living with him when the 1851 census was taken and is described as his mother. On her death certificate it says she was the widow of an Edward Marchant. Also, his two eldest children were named Edward and Sarah, which although not absloute proof, does indicate that his father was named Edward. There were too many Marchants living in Sussex at that time - I imagine an awful lot of them were related! Talmage

Hi Talmage
I think you may well be right that your Henry is son of Edward and Sarah. However it would still be possible for Henry to be Lydia's son and to have been brought up by Edward and Sarah. My great grandma appears on censuses as daughter of the lady who turned out to be her grandmother. Might be worth following up on Lydia's Henry if only to rule him out.

Hi Jan What you say is indeed a a possibility which I hadn't probably dismissed too and it is probably worth me looking at this other Henry. I will see what I can find out.

Hi Joan
Let us know how you get on. I know how difficult it is tracking down families when the surname is popular in an area - particularly as, if they are anything like my Allsopps, they seem to use the same first names as well!
