On Freecen 1841 there is a John Speirs with wife Jean and children Hugh 6 and William 2 High St, Johnstone. Abbey is the parish district for Johnstone and Elderslie so they probably married in Johnstone they wouldn't have married in Paisley Abbey.

Hi Anderson
The Abbey bit is correct not the actual Paisley Abbey but Johnstone & Elderslie was in Abbey parish at that time. It became Johnstone parish later as the town grew.
I was born in Thornhill hospital too lol - bit later than then tho!

Apparently our Fillan family tree starts in 1700 in Lithgow County in the small townships of Livingstone, Bathgate and Whitburnn. These townships are abt 3 to 4km apart, and are aprox, 18km west of Edinburgh.
Agnes who married James Gilmour was the 7th child in a family of 9 - the children of John Thomson Fillans and his wife Jean (nee White)Two of Agnes' older brothers James and John attained prominence as sculptors.James Fillans died 27 Sep 1852 of rheumatic fever in Glasgow.John Fillans the younger brother of James b: 1814..a sculptor a bust in plaster 23" high of Robert Tannahill was executed by John and later presented to the Paisley Art Gallery by one of his sisters.
1841 census: Parish- Paisley Abbey - Parish of Quoad Sacra Johnstone 22 High St. Johnstone. Jean FILLANS F 50 Scotland Agnes FILLANS F 20 Dressmaker Scotland Janet FILLANS F 15 Scotland Christina FILLANS F 13 Scotland

John Thomson Fillans b: 9 June 1775 d: 17 Jul 1851 m: Jean White (Whyte) 14 Feb 1802. She was b: 18 Jul 1784 d: 117 Jul 1851. This is more of a reply to TIFFANEY from the comments of some time ago. I have an old oil sketch of a woman and on the back is a label which reads ' Ann Waterstow, (Though the end 'w' could be an 'n'.) wife of John Fillans Sculptor. 1852'. I am assuming this is the same John Fillans wife she mentions as an 'Ann Waterson' without the extra 'T'. So I was wondering which might be the correct spelling?
