I'm trying to find 'Chalgrove', Central Rd., Morden, the home of Emma Campbell, (Living on own means), where Ethel Cooper worked as a domestic servant between 1901 and 1911 (according to the census returns) and later married my grandad, John Bain Gardner, in 1921 in Scotland and returned to that area and probably her old job at Chalgrove. My mother was then just a bairn, her mum dying in childbirth when mum was 6 years old, but was raised by Ethel as her own and was 'in service' as a teenager before returning home to Scotland.
The 1901 census sheet shows 'Chalgrove' to have been numbered 3 on Central Road, 'The Elms' at number 4, 'Lodge Gate' at 6(a) with 'The Lodge Cottage' at 6(b). Number 7 on the return is given as 'The Lodge' and next door at number 8 was 'The Lodge Farm'. Checking on Google Earth shows newer buildings, bearing in mind the last census return I have is that of 1911, so perhaps the property has been demolished, or was a casualty of the Blitz.
I'm trying to trace anyone with any knowledge of Chalgrove, Ethel and her family who were all born in Shere, John Gardner and his employment in the area, or any photos of how Chalgrove itself looked at the time. I have a photo taken around 1928 I think, with my mum, her dad and sister pictured in front of a high wall. If I post this perhaps someone will recognise it, and I'll do this once I scan it.
We intend to travel the 500 miles south in August to look for John and Ethel's graves and any pointers to where they lived and died will help us in our search.

Gardner, Ritchie, Adamson, Drummond, Dunigan, Kilday, Ireland, Horsburgh, Dick....and others. Mostly all Fife in the 1900's, but obviously some Irish connections!

Many Thanks for that Jane, I've emailed them tonight and will post any replies I get. I need to scan that photo and post it here in case someone might recognise the background. I've posted a couple of topics here on the site, regarding 'Lost graves' in the area and 'Coopers from Shere', all related to my search for my grandad and Ethel's final resting place.

A very prompt reply from the Merton Group; "The collections at Merton Local Studies Centre are currently unavailable, as our site is undergoing major redevelopment prior to the opening of a new Heritage & Local Studies Centre. There will be no public access to our collection between April 22nd and May 16th 2009. Please be assured that we will answer your enquiry as soon as possible, once normal service resumes on May 18th. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused during the intervening period."

Thanks Mark, I appreciate your help. I checked to see if I could align the house number on the census with the likely position on the modern maps, but as the census number and details don't match any properties on the maps I was at a loss as to my next move. Local knowledge is probably the best method, hence my posting here. Going by the census it looks as if 'Chalgrove' may have been at the farthest end of Central Road, Lodge Farm I guess would be near the park, though where the enumerator began his checks is open to question.

There's nothing old showing on Google at all Mark; it all looks to be 1930's build or later and the trees are well established, but not more than about 70 or 80 years old judging by their spread. There's a large open ended square of houses which I thought initially could have been older, but a better look shows that they too look newish.
Is the 1897 Morden map online? And did it show Chalgrove itself?

Hmmm, I seem only to find a small red X in a box rather than the image of the map. I see there's also a 1914 map of the area available, which would be good to view.

This photo shows my Aunt Agnes, grandad John Bain Gardner and my mum Jean. Titled by mum on the reverse of the photograph "This was taken when Agnes was in England, I think I was 12 at the time" That would date it around 1927, and I assume it was taken 'at home'. The wall at the back is certainly high, possibly an orchand wall? I have a photo of Ethel, taken many years later, which also shows a high plain brick wall, and which is titled, "Ethel, taken in the garden"
