St. John the Baptist Church, Croydon - Ricket COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 03:30 UTC (UK) »

I have found the following marriage on the IGI and I would like to know if there is additional information in the Parish Register which would help me to identify if this is my ancestor.  Does anyone have access to this Parish register?

William Ricket married Rebecca Burkin in Croydon, Surrey on November 30, 1828 at St. John the Baptist Church.

Who were William's parents?
Where/when was he born?
Was he a bachelor/widower?

Hi Component & welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

A marriage at these dates wouldn't normally give the information you want in the parish register entry.
Have you traced him & his family through the censuses?  If not perhaps we can help with this as if he's in the 1851 it will say where he was born.  A death record would provide his age at death so you would get a rough idea as to when he was born,
Looking forward to hearing from you,

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your reply.

I have done quite a bit of research on this fellow.  His marriage in Croydon is throwing me off as he did everything else in Banstead.

William Ricketts (the more common spelling) was born in Banstead November 16, 1800.

He married Catherine Browning in Banstead May 9, 1825.

They had a daughter baptized in Banstead February 12, 1826 but she was buried August 19, 1826.

Catherine Ricketts was buried in Banstead shortly after giving birth to this daughter March 17, 1826.

1841 William is living in Banstead with wife Rebecca and three sons all born in county.

1851 William is living in Banstead with wife Rebecca born Chaldon, Surrey and 5 sons all born Banstead.

1861 they do not appear on the census.  I have manually gone through the Banstead census and have found by the page numbers that some pages are missing.

November 5, 1868 Rebecca Ricketts is buried in Banstead.

1871 William is a widower and living in Banstead with two sons, one of which has a wife and two children.

December quarter 1873 a William Ricketts age 75 dies in the Epsom Registration District.

It all fits but why marry in Croydon?  Rebecca says she was from Chaldon in the 1851 census.

It would be nice to have some other identifying information in that marriage record to tie things up.

Yes, I see what you mean.
Don't forget marriages normally happened in the brides parish which might have been where Rebecca & her family were living at the time.  Although she was born in Chaldon they could have been there in 1828.
I note from the Surrey Marriage Index that Rebecca's name is given as BICKER  Undecided

I can't see from your profile where you are, but the registers for St. John the Baptist are held at the Surrey History Centre in Woking.  It might be worth it to take a look at the entry, something might have been recorded that would clinch it for you, maybe a witness?

Thank you Jane,

I am in Canada so that trip is not possible.

I was hoping that perhaps someone who would read this would have a CD of the parish registers or some other access.

Your suggestion about watching the witnesses is a good one, and I'll make a note of the spelling BICKER.

Thank you again for your expertise.

You might not be too far away from an LDS Centre in Canada.  Go to the family search site & check out their centres as you can order the pr's for St. John the Baptist on film through them,
