g grandfathers profession?

Hi could anyone tell me what  a clerical officer for the ministery of labour  is plz?  As Im looking for info on my g grandad and had been told he was a special constable as well as having another job ( i presume). On his dealth cert this is listed as his profession. Any help welcome, Kirkcaldy area of Fife he lived and d. 1955.

Clerical office was a grade within the Civil Service.  Clerical Assistant was the lowest grade and Clerical Officer was the next one up

He would have been engaged in the day to day administration of Unemployment benefits

The Ministry of Labour became the Department for Employment, which eventually gave birth to the Job Centres.

They were responsible for finding jobs for people, and staff for employers.

Thanks Hibee, any ideas if i can find out where he worked? As he lived in Kirkcaldy I would asume the old one in the high st?! Any ideas welcome, my family tell me he was a special constable but iv had no success tracing him through that avenue. Any help welcome. cheers.

One thing is certain.....you won't get any info from the Civil Service side.

You might try looking for Kirkcaldy history forums, and try to find someone who remembers him.

Having just watched a programme on bbc about Scotland and the WW2, it discussed the APR service who basically were there to assist civilians in time of need and emergancy. Having been told  by family about my  g grandfather being a "special constable "could they perhaps have ment this instead?? Just a thought, if so have I any way of finding records? Any help welcome.

I think there were large numbers of special constables during WWII....they replaced the regular police who had joined the armed forces.
