Corrigan Family in Baltinglass
« on: Wednesday 29 April 09 09:23 UTC (UK) »

I am keen to find out if anyone has information on a Maria Corrigan who was born in Baltinglass c.1842. She was the daughter of John and Mary Corrigan who I think hailed from Dublin. Maria married James Smith (born Dublin 1835) and they moved to Liverpool where their son William John Smith was born. I believe that Maria was married previously to a man with the surname Hoey but was then widowed.

there's a possible record match for Maria on the Irish Family History Foundation Website (www.irish-roots.ie) :

Church Baptism    Corrigan    Mary    1843    Co. Wicklow

there's also :

Church Baptism    Corrigan    Margaret    1845    Co. Wicklow

both records are for the RC parish of Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow and show as a match for father's name of John.

The index is free to search once you register - the record transcripts cost €5 to view. The site only has RC baptisms for Co. Wicklow at the moment - no Marriages etc.

Microfilms for this parish are available in the National Library on film P.4192
with Baptism records from 1807 to about 1880 (with some gaps).

The amount of detail included can vary from parish to parish - some have only very basic info, others have very comprehensive details.

There is a Corrigan family nearby, in Co Carlow, who I think are or were Church of Ireland.  Richard Corrigan presently lives at Garrettstown, less than 1km NW of Rathvilly.

Bill, Many thanks for the information. The evidence that I have indicates that Maria Corrigan and James Smith were Catholics as they married in an R.C. church in Liverpool. It may be that the Garrettstown Corrigans are related.
