Milne Family
« on: Wednesday 29 April 09 16:42 BST (UK) »

Hi
I'm looking for anyone who can help me with my search into the Milne Family. So far I have confirmed George Milne b.26/06/1837 m. 28/11/1861 to Eliza Kemp d. 14/11/1928. His father was John Milne although I have no confirmed birth yet but he married Helen Benzie in 1828 and died 1878. I believe his father was George Milne and mother Elizabeth Sherriff although I have also been given the surname Shirras.
Anyone that can shed any light or offer any advice would be appreciated.
Regards
Gemma

Hi
I have Milne's in my tree but dont have much info on them
William Milne and his wife Jane  Ewan not sure of birth years but around 1770 they had a daughter Ann Milne born 1804 in Fyvie
Ann married a William Scott.
I am not sure if Ann had any siblings.

Dont know if  these are your Milne's its a common name in the north east of Scotland.

Hello Gemma

If this is your first foray into Scotland, the best advice is to register at the pay per view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk   (commonly referred to as SP), - you'll end up having to use it.  £6 buys 30 credits which will allow for 5 downloads - assuming a first time hit. (copies - not transcriptions).

Downloading the 1878 death entry - if he died in Scotland  should bring up both your mans parents and give the mothers maiden name if known.

You're probably aware that the IGI (www.familysearch.org) has a total of 7 children born to John Milne and Helen Benzie.  Scotlands People also has a search facility -before 1855 to enter either or both parents names to bring up a list of children.  However, not all children in Scotland were registered pre 1855, and the ones registered which do show up were from the 'established church' - or Church of Scotland.

If the IGI combination is correct.  This will be your family in 1841 (the year of the first full census - also note that for adults the ages were rounded down) - from www.freecen.org.uk

The link below is worth printing off relating to Scottish research......

A quick IGI search doesn't bring up a marriage of a George Milne and Elizabeth Sherrifs/Shirras or variants - but means nothing....

I'd also download a copy of the OPR record from SP of the 1828 in case it gives any additional info.......

And from freecen  at www.freecen.org.uk - the 1851 census

Address: Hatton Of Ardoyne

MILNE   John   Head   M   M   54   Ag Lab/farmer 2 1/2 Acres    Aberdeenshire - Oyne
MILNE   Helen   Wife   M   F   45       Aberdeenshire - Oyne
MILNE   Elizabeth   Dau   U   F   21   Emp At Home    Aberdeenshire - Oyne
MILNE   James   Son   U   M   20   Ag Lab    Aberdeenshire - Oyne
MILNE   John   Son   U   M   11   Scholar    Aberdeenshire - Oyne
MILNE   Robert   Son   U   M   8   Scholar    Aberdeenshire - Oyne

The 1851 census seems to suggest that 'your' John was born 1797 .

And possibly George and brother Alexander: working as farm servants in the household of George Hall

Civil Parish: Chapel Of Garioch Ecclesiastical Parish, Folio: 3 Page: 8 Schedule: 20 Address: Old Logie

Hi Piglet

Since the last posts on here I have confirmed that John died in 1878 and that his parents were William Milne and Elizabeth Milne nee Sherriffs. Still have been unable to locate the marriage details of these two though.

Regards
