I am trying to find an Alexander Marr in the 1881/91 censuses
He was born in 1870 in Old Aberdeen.
His parents Mary Ann and William Marr were married in 1860.
I am trying to find if he had any brothers or sisters.
If anyone can find his parents in the 1861/71 censuses to see if they have any other children that would be brilliant.
I was at the library yesterday and looked on the 1881 LDS disc but was not lucky enough to find Alexander. Probably just missed him.
He is married by 1896 and I have him in the 1901 census but he disappears around 1914. He was a stone setter.
There is an Alexander in the 1891 census as a Boarder which could be him as there is also a William which could be his father. I found that on free CEN
Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Betty

Hi Betty,
Children to William Marr and Mary Ann Taylor. All Old Machar unless stated otherwise:
David Blennie Marr 23 Feb 1860 William Marr 26 May 1861 James Marr 7 Nov 1863 Archibald Marr 14 Apr 1868 Mary Ann Collie Taylor Marr 2 Jan 1873 Cumlodden, Argyllshire
Can't see Alexander's birth on the IGI, but it may have been missed out.

Hi Betty
Found the following which are possibles, they are not on same pages in 1881 but adults were probably split up from children at Poorhouse. Considering Alexander's Occupation seems good possibility as in 1891 Mary Ann is shown as Stone Dressers Wife. Perhaps Alexander and his father were away together working. As can be seen from IGI entry (at bottom of message) one of his siblings Mary Ann,s father is William MARR so I think this fits in.
1881 Census Registration Number: 168/2 Old Machar Poorhouse
Mary Ann Marr age 38 Old Machar Alexander Marr age 10 Benawe, Argyle Mary Ann Marr age 8 Furnace, Argyle Ann Marr age 4 Benawe, Argyle Margt Marr age 1 Kilspindie, Perth Barbara Marr age 1 Kilspindie, Perth
1891 Census Registration Number 698A P 16 Ratho, Midlothian
Mary A Marr age 48 Aberdeen Head Stone Dressers Wife Mary Ann Marr age 18 Cumlodden, Argyle Daughter Margt Marr age 11 Kilspindie, Perth Daughter Barbara Marr age 11 Kilspindie, Perth Daughter Robina Marr age 7 Aberdeen Daughter
The only child I could find on IGI is as follows: MARY ANN COLLIE TAYLOR MARR Birth: 02 JAN 1873 Cumlodden, Argyll, Scotland Father: WILLIAM MARR Mother: MARY ANN TAYLOR
Hope this is of some help Robert

Thanks Hume for the information you have given. You are brilliant.
It certainly looks like the correct family. The only thing is I have Alexander's birth extract from Scotland's People and he was born in Old Aberdeen. I am not too bothered about that at the moment as I know the birth place can be wrongly stated on the censuses.
Now to see if I can find what happened to the children and see if anybody else out there are researching this family.
They might know what happened to Alexander.
Thanks for your time.

Hi Robert
Thanks for the information. Since replying to Hume I have found that this family are the correct family. At first I was not sure but had another look at the birth extract and Mary Ann's maiden name was Taylor.
Thanks for your time on this. It is much appreciated.
Now to see if I can find what happened to this family.
Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply. It is very much appreciated.
This certainly seems to be the family from the IGI I was given earlier.
The family in the 1881 and 1891 seem to be from the same family as my Alexander as I ordered the birth extract for Barbara. It gives the same date of marriage for Mary Ann and William as the extract I have for Alexander birth.
I have Alexander's marriage extract so unless there were two William Marrs and Mary Ann Taylors who married in September 1860, I should have the correct family.
Once I get some more credits I will get an extract for one of the children in the 1871 census just to make sure they are all the same family.
Thanks all for your efforts.
Cheers
Betty
