I have a problem, I was researching my husband's grandfather's family, Whitworth. On the 1891 and 1901 census it says they were born in Holmgate Derbyshire. The 1881 says, Job 1813 miller Disley Alfred 1860 coal miner Disley Ann(e) 1854 Stockport Samuel 1862 colliery labourer Holmgate Derbyshire Ann(e) married Frank Kenning parents of George who I thought both came from Holmgate or Clay Cross in Derbyshire. George started the Kenning car business. Can someone please solve this for me. Thank you, Anne.

Hi Anne - welcome to Rootschat..
I had a look at Job Whitworth in 1871, 81 & 91 and they all say Holmgate. No mention of Disley or Stockport. The 1881 I am looking at is RG11/3427/144/35 which has Job,wife & children all living with the Kennings in Clay Corss.
Are you looking at a transcription or the original?

Hi millymcb, Thanks for your help. The 1881 I looked at was a transcription on Find My Past. I'm new to this and have been looking at several sites. All the free ones first, as I have not decided which to subscribe to yet. Anne.

It is odd that the transcription you have is so wrong. I can't see anything on the page which would lead them to write Disley and Stockport instead of Holmgate.
Check on www.familysearch.com which has 1881 for free (just transcripts) to make sure I have found the correct entry. If it still says Disley and Stockport then we are looking at different entries.
I have checked the original on Ancestry and that says Holmgate.
And this is a very good lesson for a beginner to learn...... However good they are , transcripts can contain errors and you really need to look at the originals (of any document) to confirm it is correct.

I have checked www.familysearch.com as you suggested and it says he was born in Holmgate.
This is a lesson I have learned, I will always check originals to confirm, you cannot rely on transcripts alone.
Thank you for all your help, and for putting me on the right path to searching for my family.
Anne.
