Dorcester Gaol

I have just found out that James POPE born 1834 was in Dorchester Gaol in the 1851 census, he is listed as being 16 years old a chimney sweep and born in Sherbourne.
Does anyone know how i can find out what his crime was? please

Any help would be very much appreciated

TNA Kew have Assizes records, there in the ones for Dorset (ref ASSI/21 or ASSI/23 or ASSI/25) you would probably find his crime.  You would have to look from 1851 backwards - laborious I know, but sometimes this is the only way.  If you cannot get there yourself, I believe there are quite a few researchers who go there.  Have a look at the TNA website for more info.
