Hello there,
My grandfather Joseph Orr died in 1916 and his address on the death certificate is shown as 1 Victoria Terrace, Donaghadee. Despite making enquiries and looking on various maps, I cannot find where Victoria Terrace is or was. Does anyone know the whereabouts of this address? It could be that Victoria Terrace was the name given to a row of terraced houses in a particular street, perhaps now even demolished. I should be grateful for any information

It appears to have been cleared in redevelopment around 1955

I am looking out some old maps in case i can spot it.
Check with local library if they have a facility for viewing the archive, i also think its at PRONI

Many thanks for replying to my query about Victoria Terrace. If you are able to find out anything from old maps, I should be grateful to hear of it. I have an ordnance survey map of Donaghadee for the year 1901 but cannot find Victoria Terrace on it, which makes me think the name was given to a row of terraced houses in a street of a different name. You are probably right when you say they may have been demolished by now. I just wondered whereabouts in Donaghadee they would have been. My grandfather was previously an RIC man based at the Police Station on Shore Road, Donaghadee.

Hi Carol,
Nothing on my maps, as you say perhaps part of a terrace fronting a road with a different name.
Suggestion - email the local library and see if they can help, here is the link to their page. Perhaps they could ask some of their older local members where the terrace was?

Thanks for your reply re Victoria Terrace. I have looked on my 1901 map of Donaghadee and have seen where William Street and Edward Street are. I'd be grateful to hear if your cousin can find anything out and in the meantime, I'll wait to hear from Donaghadee Library. Will let you know if I do!

Hello to Pete and Dee
I had a reply from Donaghadee Library today as to the whereabouts of Victoria Terrace and was told it was a group of houses near what is The Parade (from Manor Street to Donaghadee train station). They were a mix of family homes, hotels and rooming houses. The Terrace is not there now. The library gave me a link for an old photo of The Parade - www.oldukphotos.com
Thank you to both for your help in my query. Dee was correct in saying the Terrace was in the William and Edward Streets area.

Thanks very much for sending me website information for the Donaghadee photographs. These are great photos and the sites cover other parts of Ireland also. I have ancestors from Sligo and Armagh so have been able to look at old photos from there as well. Many thanks.
Victoria Terrace doesn't seem to be marked on my 1901 Donaghadee map but at least I have an idea now of the area where it would have been.

Thank you for your message. Sgt Joseph Orr's family is on the 1911 census, under the names of his wife Margaret and son Charles (who was my father, born 1907 at the Shore Street Police Barracks, Donaghadee). It seems that policemen were listed separately by their initials. Sgt Orr was J.O. on a separate sheet called Form H which also contains the initials of the constables. Sgt Orr signed Form A as head of family even though the form only has his wife's and son's names on it. I think the same rule applies for the military also.
