How many children were there?
« on: Wednesday 29 April 09 22:12 UTC (UK) »

I spent a couple of hours at Nottingham Archives this week hoping to establish how many siblings my grandmother had.  There is talk of between 12 and 14.  I found her parents marriage at Gedling All Hallows in October 1886 (George Mosedale and Louisa Ingledew) and my grandmother's baptism (Mary Frances Mosedale) in June 1887 in Netherfield, and that was all I could find.

I know they didn't leave the area as my great grandfather and other family members were involved with the railway and lived at Carlton.  The other names I have are Louisa, Margaret, George (born/died 1890), Gertrude, Charles, Ada, John, Ellen, Florence, Clara, Beatrice and George, born between 1888 and 1911

Does anyone have access to any possible records, or have any suggestions where else I could look.

Thanks

What 'number of kids' detail is there in the 1911 census?
That'll help to know if there were 'in betweens' or 'tailenders' to locate..

Hi Pauline

I had great hopes for the 1911 but was disappointed.  It lists Total Children 10, Children living 10.  These are the last 10 listed above and are all  on the census, aged between 21 and one month, with parents.  No mention of George, died 1890, Louisa who I believe died about 1897, but more importantly, my grandmother who was still alive, but In Service.

Linnet

I presume you've tried FreeBMD and it's baptisms you are looking for ?

Is there a chance they changed religion after your Gran was born ?

Just a thought.

Hi Lynne & Pauline  Smiley

There are possible birth registrations for all the children you have listed under Basford District on FreeBMD (and some more Mosedales, possibly cousins) between 1887 and 1911.

Do you have the 1901 census info for Edmund & Louisa and 5 of the children, and Mary with grand-parents James & Elizabeth Ingledew, both sets in Netherfield, Notts?

Kind regards

I thought baptisms would be the best way of checking.  I mistakenly assumed that they would all appear one after the other in the parish records!!

I suppose they could have changed religion.  Is there any way of checking online?  I won't be able to get back to Nottingham for a while.

Lynne,

Perhaps they misread the requirements for filling out the form and only listed the 10 children who were living with them at the time.

As your grandmother was away from home and earning, they may have thought they did not need to include her, or the others who had died.

Or maybe they did not wish to include the children who had died.  Undecided

I imagine that some people may have found these questions unneccessary or intrusive and decided to omit some information.

Hello Gaie

I have the census information for 1901.  Mary was also with her grandparents in 1891 aged only 3.  That's another mystery!

Ruskie

Perhaps there were 13 children in total, and not 13 survivors, and, as you say they misunderstood the form.

I would love to know why my gran appears to have been the only one baptised though.
