Broomshields Hall, near Satley
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 08:03 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

My GG Grandfather Thomas CARR was listed as a gamekeeper at Broomshields Hall in the 1871 census. I have searched the internet for any information on the hall but not a great deal comes up, just some pictures of the old walls and lodge house. This of course is good but I would really like to know more!

I wondered if anyone could help me and point me in the direction of any information about Broomshields Hall, absolutely anything at all would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Em

You could try
Keys to the Past http://www.keystothepast.info/k2p/usp.nsf/pws/keys+to+the+Past+-+home+page
or
A search in Historical Directories http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbykeyword.asp (try using the keyword search for County Durham).

My grandmother was born at Broomshields Home Farm in 1869 and I believe that the name of the farm was often shortened to 'West Shields' and it may still be known by this name.

Regarding the history of the hall, Whellan;s 'History, Topography and directory of County Durham, 1894 has the following:

"Satley.

Broomshields is an estate in this township, which at the time of Hatfield's survey, 1375, was a separate township, divided into several parcels, which were ultimately given to the adjoining townships.   The Greenwell family have helld this estate for more than four centuries.  Peter Greenwell of Broomsheles occurring as early as 1488.

Broomshields Hall is a good residence, occupying a fine situation, overlooking a well-wooded and diversified landscape.    Through the dene close by flows the Pan Burn.  The Hall was rebuilt in 1723, and additions have since been made by different members of the family."

In the 1950s and 60s the Hall was owned by Bartram & Sons, the Sunderland Shipbuilders.

Hello again,

Thanks Jennifer for those links, there was a little bit of information on the Keys to the Past site, mainly architectural information on the building, which was interesting. Will have a plough through the directories probably this evening.

Thank you Wearsider too for the help, Thomas CARR actually resided in Broomshields Cottage near the Hall, so not exactly sure where this is / was on the estate. My apologies actually, it is the 1881 census he is there, not the 1871.

Still trying to find his marriage too, a lady called Jane. His first child was born in 1872. Still trying to pick that family to bits really.

Thanks,

Em

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
Click on search, and enter postcode DL13 4HW
When the new map has loaded, go to the drop-down menu at the bottom of
the page and select 1856 - 1866.
This shows Broomshields Cotttage just to the south of the Hall.
(You can zoom in and out using the + and - buttons at the bottom of the page.)

Wow Jennifer, thank you so much, that map is great, thanks.

It also looks like the cottage still exists today in some form, which is marvellous  Smiley

I have a thing about maps too, I love them!

In my previous posting I incorrectly named the farm - I should have said that my grandmother was born at West Broomshields Farm, the name often being shortened to 'West Shields', the name by which it is currently known.

I apologise for this mistake.

My Hedleys  gave me  a right dance .....but it seems  now that they  come from Satley..... a place I am not familiar with I am from Tyneside and now live in Northumberland.......but Ada Hedley born 1882 had put me on the wrong road as she had said she was born at South Shields County Durham in later life....but everything pointed to Satley even the fact she had married her husband James Harmieson of Corbridge in Hexham she  also lived in the home of the Colliery Cashier at Orchard House Corbridge ......by chance I found  this site and some one talking about Keys to the Past...as...... I zoomed in and then slowly out I saw South Shields Farm.......

.I am so glad I stopped by and read your conversation........I am now doubly sure that .....I have the right Ada Hedley from the 1891 Census daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Hedley father a miner....
