Hannah Hansford b1797 Wooley, Yorkshire a mystery
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 09:39 UTC (UK) »

One of my family names I am researching is Hansford, currently I have about 55 of them in my tree. They all come from a cluster of villages in Dorset around Netherbury, with one exception,  Hannah (my gggg grandmother) who appears on the 1851 census as born in Woolley, Yorkshire about 1796. The same information appears in about nine other members trees on ancestry, we may have all copied from each other !

This seems very odd to me, I want to try and authenticate this information, also find details of her parents. I have already checked the Yorkshire records via RC folks up there, no information at all, someone suggested Woolley (near Bath) but nothing there on IGI.  Apart from her birth details, it appears she married (Charles Warr in 1817) and lived in Halstock, Dorset. Here is the 1851 census record, I would really appreciate some help on this as I would like to solve this, Phil.

Where do you have the date of marriage from???

There are only submitted records on IGI - and  they seem to be nothing more than a guess???

Hi Phil,

Should be treated with caution - sometimes information is correct - very often it turns out to be nothing more than a guess (often using dates from census)

Where did you find Hannah's maiden name?Huh

Hannah's maiden name came from the other trees on ancestry. This clearly needs more research. I guess a good start point might be the parish records for Halstock, starting with the marriage to Charles Warr in 1817.

I guess we also have to be careful with census records  Undecided. In this case in 1841 Hannah shows as born out of county, then in 1851 in Woolery Yorkshire, seems hard to prove this, maybe this is an unsolvable case, but since I found rootchat last month, there are some very good detectives amongst the membership  Smiley Smiley, hence my post ... Phil.

Hi Phil,

Why not start with putting a post out asking for christenings of children - list children from census-stating there are only submitted entries on IGI - then you will find if all the children were of the same mother - as first child b. c. 1817 and last child b c 1839 maybe there were 2 marriages??? - worth doing a little detctive work before looking for marriage (my opinion)?

Just a thought, establish where the Dorset militia were stationed at the time of the marriage. The units moved about the country quite a lot, my 2 great grandfather John Luffman left the Somerset Militia to marry at Alford Lincs in a slightly earlier time (1795), but the Napoleonic War still continued into the 1810s.

Their records will be at The Keep Museum Dorchester, and/or the National Archives. Their may be something on the Dorset OPC site.

I am not sure about 1838 Birth Certs, but would it have Mothers name as well ?. At least purchasing it would confirm Fathers name Wink

We have not found supposed Father Charles on any Census have we?

Jonas WARR
December 1838
Beaminster
8  6

Just in case someone can look them up;
Children from submitted records;

Sarah 1818
Caroline 1820
Ann 1821
Jane 1822
John 1825
William 1828
Charles 1830
Richard 1833
Jonas 1838, died 1841( there is a death as well on Freebmd)
Francis 1839 ( cant find birth reg)

1851 census has Hannah, son Charles aged 20 and lodging in household Richard and Mary Ann Warr, born abt. 1795 Halstock. Is he a possible brother of Charles?

Marriage;
Richard WARR
Mary ANN DOWDLESWELL
22 February 1829, Beaminster, Dorset (extracted)

Trish, thank you for your help on this.

You make a good point about purchasing the 1938 birth certificate of Jonas. This should have both parents, including proof that Hannah's maiden name was Hansford. I shall consider making a £7 investment here !

I have not managed to find father Charles Warr on a census, he should be somewhere on 1841 (I believe he died in 1842).

I think Richard Warr (b 1894), the lodger in 1851 is almost certainly the  brother of Charles (husband of Hannah) . Both Richard and Mary Ann appear on their own in 1861 census as paupers living in Halstock.

So whilst I am finding out more about children of Hannah and can trace her husband's roots in Dorset, I am still no further forward in resolving who Hannah's parents were and how she came to be born in Yorkshire
